I've got an interesting starting problem on my '89.
It cranks and starts instantly when cold.
When shut down after it's up to temp, it will BARELY crank. Often not enough to fire off. The solenoid doesn't chatter like a weak battery.
Let it cool, and it's fine.
Battery voltage is good during cranking (dash lights are fully lit), charging at 13.7 volts.
I'm thinking binding starter; my colleague's say timing chain.
Wouldn't a slack chain retard the spark, not advance it?
Comments welcome.

I'm thinking worn starter -
try doing a starter draw-test - cold and hot -

a slack timing chain would be slack in a cold or hot motor -
