Pls Help 4.9 ac compressor froze

1219 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  smooth3d
The ac compresser froze on my 4.9. I need to fix the serpentine belt now, Anybody know what the correct belt is to bypass the ac compresser? I will fix the ac later when I have the money. I've searched the furum and got mixed answers, some say you cant do this due to the routing of the pulley's. Some say you can with no problems, And one said a belt from a 3800 will work.

If anybody know's pls help. and if you have done this pls give part number or type of car the belt was used for. :banghead:

Thanks Smooth

You cannot bypass the AC on 4.9...unfortunatelly. Checked out the archives but could not find any success story....This picture was supposed to show where to put garden hose to flush the heater core, but one can see the routing of the serpentine belt too.

Absolutley you can bypass the A/C compressor - I will get you the part # for the belt tomorrow - I ran the car for the majority of june with the shorter belt until I had the inclination the spend $ on a new compressor. I keep the shorter belt in the trunk though just in case.

Conversely, you could use a piece of string, routed around the pulleys (bypassing the compressor of course) to give you a measurment to bring into your autoparts store.

The water pump pulley seems to not get enough grip when AC is bypassed...
I looked at the picture, It looks it will only go halfway around the water pump. Did you have any cooling issues chris? It is getting cooler here in okla. The part # would be of great help.
Chris,

Was the water pump pulley driven by the back side of the belt as in the original setup?

yes, the w/p is driven by the flat part of the belt.

I am not sure if there would be enough tension on the w/p pully... I would say to try it..... it'll either slip or it wont.
Well it's over, It was not the ac compresser it was the idler pulley that froze up, fixed it. all fine now just need a ac clutch to work the ac again and that whine out. thanks for everybody's help.
