OBSIDIAN is from the Latin Phrase "Et Obsidia" which, when translated into modern english, means "black plastic that scratches when you touch it with your finger."

It could be taken off and coated with one of those hydroform things.. even just coated black. But some of the parts are moving parts, touched a lot, dunno if that would work.

Water-dip trim is an excellent option, when executed & sealed properly, you'll never know the original wasn't pure carbon fiber or wood trim. At a minimum it won't scratch instantly if you rub your sleeve cuff over it.

I know GM engineers frequent this forum...I hope they've taken into consideration how little people like the plastic "piano" insta-scuff trim and may revise it for future models.

Do a search, I started a thread about this a LONG time ago. Many V owners became enraged and upset, saying that they "didn't buy the car for the interior anyway!" which is fine...but some people do care, as I do. I thought hydro-dip would be a great option but so far I haven't found anyone who's tried it yet.

Does anyone know what the difficulty level is in removing all of the black obsidian trim?

If it's easy, perhaps the water-dipped coatings are a good idea. It would also give some options for colors, finishes, etc.

Question: how hard and scratch resistant are the water dipped coatings?

I simply don't understand why the trim in the car is SO soft. I've got some screwdrivers with black, glossy handles and they are pretty tough. I'm holding a blue SMINT box and it's pretty tough. That trim is soft like butter.

I thought I was being careful. I have only 563 miles on the car and the area around the volume control knob is destroyed. WTF??!?!!

D3 does custom interiors; right???

Can D3 make a piano black replacement that is black and shiny like the obsidian but doesn't scratch??????

There are plenty of threads about plastics polishes and other polishes that will brighten this stuff right up. Search is your friend. I have used Novus products with good results.

Higher quality water-dipped coatings are very durable (especially compared to the crap plastic installed at the factory). Most water-dip coatings are also finished with a coat of clear varnish/acrylic. Do yourself a favor and get the plastic insta-scratch water dipped in whatever finish you desire.

No, but I agree that it definitely could use some help.
