Anyone know what type of paint to use to get such a bright glossy finish on our engine covers like is pictured below. Do you think thats professionally dont with real automotive paint and clear coats. Or is just a high temp spray that I could buy and Do it myself. Also any negaitve effects anyone can think of. I think it looks pretty darn good.

There was a post not too long ago regarding a guy who was doing custom painting of engine covers. It may be in the search function and might have your answer.

I think the guy was painting flames on the cover, but he would certainly be able to do solid colors.

so this isnt something I can do? I was thinking: drive to pepboys (8 dollar can of high gloss black high temp paint) and going at it myself. But I dont think I would be able to get the nice glossy smooth look, plus I dont want it to look like cheap shit, I want it too look oem

How handy are you with paint? I've never painted anything that didn't wind up looking like crap.

For the OEM look, take it to a good body shop. It won't cost much and will certainly look better and last longer.

yea i agree. I was just wondering if a high gloss that is smooth like that could be achieved simply using spray paint.

Consider the need for proper priming and the fact that it is a high temperature environment.

Good results like that will only come with skill, good equipment and paint, and good painting conditions. Don't even think of trying it yourself.......

I'm still working on a group buy on plated engine covers. Mine is being done now in black chrome. So is the fuse box cover, radiator A/C cover and upper grill strip..all black chrome. As soon as I get my parts back I'll post pics.

I have seen ones that guys painted themselves also. It seems like a lot of them use the plastic paints from Wal-mart; Krylon Fusion I believe.

Also in reference to the price, I was wondering how much a simple all gloss black finish would cost. Nothing major, no flames etc. Just Jet Black. You think I can do this myself?

Get yourself a smooth plastic box, and some black spray paint, and make believe that it is your engine cover. Paint it the best you can. Then mentally add a level of complexity due to the ridges and contours of the real engine cover, and ask yourself if you are comfortable with putting that level of paint quality as a showpiece under the hood of your $50K car.

Or hell....just give the engine cover a try with the understanding that if you fail you will need to live with it ugly, buy a new one, or send it out to a pro.
