Ok, Here is the deal. I don't want/need another car, but thanks to me selling my Impala last year and having no car coming into car show season, I got the bug for at least a little show and shine. So I at least want a chance at not being ignored by everybody but the geriatric at Car craft this year. I have two problems I need to solve.

1. I want Rims, 18" at the most,

The rims are temporary, as when the car gets restored it will go back to 100% stock, but I think it would be fun to give it some attitude for a while.

2. I want to do something about my sun baked paint.

I need your advice.

Here is a picture I took today of how bad the paint is,


It is single stage 34 year old paint, I can't make it worse so I am looking for Ideas from some of you older folks to make it pop. The trunk, roof and hood look like this. The sides have been repainted when the new quarters were put on.

Also I want some rims that will give this car character. Nothing Ghetto, just something tasteful and mean. The only thing I can think of is Impala rims with a deVille cap. But I am open to suggestions.

I say keep the stock rims, but get a set of 1.3" whitewalls. That will keep your car from becoming ghetto, but will give it the originality that 99% of these poor things are missing. Also, a little polishing compound goes a loooong way. Take some time, buff the crap out of it, and give it some *real* white rubber. You'll have a different car, IMHO.

Some of that miracle wax stuff they used to sell years ago actually worked pretty good at bringing back the color on that single stage paint. I can't think of any names right now but I'll bet Billy Mays has something lol.

If it were me, I'd just save the "wheel" money and put it into a new paint job. These Caddys have plenty of class and pizazz w/out going the "big wheel" route. Maybe I'm old school, but 16" is about the max for my tastes when it come to wheels. Personally, if I wanted to get wild on the wheels, it would be some of those older version Caddy "wire wheels" with some decent whitewalls like Benzilla mentioned.

That looks great. I know the Vogues are crappy tires, but they sure look cool. The WW right next to the wheel make it look bigger...



Here's a set for $200! Not chrome, though. The chromes go for serious bank.

Get a buffer and get to work on that paint! I bet you can get it looking real nice:cool2:

For the rims, I like the whitewall idea. Or you could go for the 3" "gansta whites" as some people call them.



As for wheels, I'd leave the stock caps or go with a vintage wire wheel like that red Deville. Maybe you could change the caps out to a different year, I always liked these style caps. You could get them with a different colored center to better match your car.

I'd recommend getting a set of the turbine vane discs that were available for your year. They give the car a lot more visual interest than the standard rims, esp. when mated to the period-correct 1.3" whites Ben mentioned. Best part is, you can keep them even after the car's restoration, so it's not money lost or tied up in something merely temporary. As to the paint, rubbing compound and a good cleaning/polishing wax will bring the finish back to a very decent shine, although it looks like there's some crackling present, which nothing but a repaint can fix. Love the car, though, it looks sweet!
