Paint Problem :-(

2089 Views 21 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  tommy compton
So, some SOB hit my car while it was parked  ...I noticed that some of the paint is chipped from the front and back bumpers. I have an all black 2007 CTS and I want to get this fixed ASAP. What should be the best/cheapest way to do this?

Bite the bullet and take your baby to a good body shop. (Best/cheapest are usually mutually exclusive.)
Touch up paint?
How does touch up paint work? where can i get it? is it a spray paint? or do i need to get it fixed professionaly? how much damage should i expect on my pocket?
You can probably get free estimates at body shops. Unless you have a very steady hand, touchup paint is not always a good idea--especially since you have a NEW car. Get it done right!

Oh, and to answer your question, touch up paint usually comes in little bottles with small brush applicators--sort of like nail polish.
People on the forum claim you can get it from any Cadillac dealer, though I have not yet tried to get some. (and I need some!)

I would assume it's not spray paint but like model paint? That you would just put on with a small brush. I think it's relatively cheap, too.

EDIT: I have a small section of my back right bumper which was "hit" by another car and rubbed some paint off. There is black plastic underneath, and having a silver CTS, it shows up pretty easily. By the look of it, it doesn't look like that paint could chip at all. It's just plastic. I could be wrong?
If the cracks (in the paint coating) are significant, then you could be talking about $1000+ to remove both bumpers and re-do them.

If so, why not wait until you get a few more problems on them? Sounds like you live in a city where you will regularly experience these situations.

Birdy's got a point.
thats the thing..i dont live in the city, i live in the suburbs..but, i park at a train station all day during the weekdays...i am gonna go to a couple of body shops and get some estimates...i called the dealership and they have told me that they have 2 touch up paint bottles for $12..i will get the estimates...and maybe try to touch up paint myself...and if it looks Ok, its coo..if not i can always take it to the body shop....

how does that sound?
Hey, it's your car!! Do what feels right to you. Good luck.
If it's not too bad you can overfill the sctarches with the touch up paint and then wet sand very lightly with 1200 to 2000 wetatory paper. Then carefully buff the area. If this is your direction, make sure you clean all of the wax off of the area before you touch it up.
if its on your bumper, its probably chipped right to the plastic???
if so you'll need a primer with flex (flex primer). you must use a degreaser to get all wax and or dirt off before painting. prep sand with about a 400 t0 800 grit sand paper.
you can goto any auto paint place and get paint mixed in either a spray bomb or a can. then you will need a clearcoat, i recommend an enamel clear coat, duplicolor makes one, should be sold at wal-mart. after you clear coat and it dries over night, lightly sand with 2000 wet sand paper, thun buff with a scratch and swirl remover. black is pretty forgiving for touch-up paint.
i think you could find a bodyshop that would paint both bumpers for 500.00. if painting ain't your thing.
Personally I would never attempt this myself, especially on a brand new car. Of course, if the OP could post pics we could get a better idea of how involved the repair might be.
for the the trouble its worth i would make an insurance claim for hit and run, and pay the deductable, unless the damage is small.
i agree, lets see some pics

I hate it but I'm just too lazy to do anything about it.

I get the same feeling. Even though I know they don't notice it.
Touch up paint looks pretty good at 50'..:yup:
If the plastic used for our bumpers was silver and not black, it wouldn't be so much of an issue. You blaclacks live on easy street.
So, I did get some estimates yesterday...I went to this body shop - and the estimate was close to 3000...I hadn't noticed that the rear panel adjacent to the rear bumper had a lil bump as well. 3000 was way more than I wanted to spend. So, I went on Craigslist to find someone who could do it for cheaper. So, this guy came over and had a look at the damage and said he could do the job and we agreed on 400.

He said, he would do everything that Tommy Compton said....do i have a good deal...I also noticed that there was a lil ding on my Front passenger door..he will fix that too.
