Been chasing down the problem causing this code for months now. Got a bunch of valve clatter and stuff a few times when the problem started and at that time was intermittent. It started right after an oil change. Now the code won't stay cleared and check engine light blinks (and traction contorl warnings come on) at every stop light. When accelerating I can feel the cylinder start to fire and pull its weight at about 3500-4k rpms.
What I have done so far: I just put sea foam in the fuel and drove it and noise and misfire cleared on its own.
Next time it happened (a month later) swapped coil with #1 reset code and it came back on #4. Did a full tune up with wires. Then I just drove the truck and misfire stopped and valve noise went back to the way it was, code cleared its self.
Next time it started (two weeks later). I put a new injector in #4. Cleared code and it came back, ran fuel cleaner for about 4 tanks and problem stopped again on its own code cleared by its self.
Happened again (two days later) after second tank of gas without fuel cleaner in it. And problem has been constant since then for about 1.5 months.
What can I try from here?
Am I wrong to think that it's not the lifters because it runs good at high rpm when the valves need to open the most?
Is there a fuse or fusable link on the AFM system that could have popped.
Could it be the VVT valve and actuator behind the water pump?
