As a former M owner, there is zero comparison when it comes to pricing mods. For just a few thousand bucks, you can get a CTS-V into the 600's EASY. I have very little doubt that although the new M5 will surely be great, it will still come up short in a lot of categories against even lightly modded V2, and at a tremendous cost.

true to this point...

BUT, the new tt v8 should be MUCH cheaper to mod. a tune alone should net least 100hp over stock. Tunes are CHEAP.

When I think of competition, I think of some key aspects. Performance and value. My favorite analogy is a typical PC. Sure you could spend a ton of money on a system because you have no idea what goes into building one, you just know you want the best. Then there are those that know every bit of what goes into a true performance rig. They prefer to build their own rather then spending on a name. If the BMW costs more and does more, then some would consider it worthwhile, especially since their reputation points might go up in the land of suburbia. I could seriously care less what my pretentious neighbors think about my V. I just know that I got a LOT of performance for relatively little compared to the European competition.

I imagine the Dinan software upgrade will be decently pricey. The E60 (N/A) 550i's ECU tune went from $500 to $3,000 for the new 550i with a 4.4L V8TT.

So if the same multiple is applied to the new M5 tune (6 X the N/A pricing), the Dinan tune could cost over $6,500. You have to remember that Dinan also provides a powertrain warranty that matches the manufacturers warrantyfor their products.

Dinan supposedly got a nice 95hp (crank) increase on their ECU tune for the new 550i. A similar bump on the M5 would get you near 700hp (crank). Not bad for just a tune (got to love turbo cars).
