Hi all,

I just received my first notice to renew my Onstar. I do not have Nav in my CTS so I use the Onstar turn-by-turn directions and I actually like it so my plan was to renew. My question is; has anybody considered what happens to Onstar if GM files bankruptcy? Will they still operate?

I heard from a reliable high level source that there is internal GM rumors (for what it is worth) that after bankruptcy Onstar will merge with another group that resides in the Rencen (downtown Detroit). Just a rumor ...:gossip:

Above link is to a recent article on this subject.

My Onstar subscription is due to expire in a few days. I just called about renewing. I was given the $200 rate for 12 months of Safe & Sound only. Also, I would have to buy another 100 minutes of Hands-Free calling for $40, although I still have a 63 minute balance. I said I would just let the subscription expire. I was transferred to the "Customer Loyalty" department. There I was offered 14 months for $149 plus tax, $157 total. She also rolled over my 63 minute balance for another 12 months. This is the deal I had read about on this forum some time ago. Thank you, Forum.

And if you turn that offer down, they'll offer you 3 free months.

Bankrupt doesn't mean business operations stop. The legal term is completly different than the image of a guy wearing a barrell.

The Obama Administration has thrown out 100+ years of evolved (Chapter 11) bankruptcy law in the Chrysler filing; and, judging from recent press leaks, there's no telling what Obama-Gettelfinger Motors, Inc., might do once they get there hands on General Motors. That said, I'd still bet that OnStar will continue business as usual for many years to come.

I just renewed my Directions/Connections plan for $259/year($50 off), and they rolled over my 149 minutes w/o having to purchase new minutes. My viewpoint is I like the service and to continue doing business as usual. It may be a gamble but things wont get better if consumers dont invest in the industry.

I’m very worried about having a radical extremist running our country, especially when everything is going to be government run and owned. Socialistic countries don’t have a good track record of prosperity and success. :ill:

I am too. We have so much wonderful going on here right now with advanced capitalism, and Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland have such a terrible track record . . . :lies:

Both Canada and Switzerland's economies are still overwhelmingly capitalistic and one should not confuse publicy funded social programs within a capitalistic economy with full-blown socialism. Sweden, while more socialistic than the other two, went through very tough times in the 90's and has actually expanded its application of capitalist ideals, which have had a positive impact on their economy over the last decade.

The trend with respect to recent efforts by the Administration to reach beyond regulation to actual ownership and operating control of previously private enterprises is significant. No matter your political position or the relative and often subjective evaluation of other nation's economies or quality of life - there is no denying that capitalism has historically proven to yield much better standards of living and economic growth than communist or socialist systems.

Nice post. I wouldn't agree with you however in whole. The mix of socialist programs, and capitalist policies/philosophies, is too complex to ever be reduced to what capitalism and socialism have produced outside of innumerable mitigating factors. Add in moment in history and issues like globalization and these things are more discursive than cemented in notions of progress or simple comparisons. Of course, my comment was more for humor sake than serious. I am a professor, so if you want to read some of my work on the topic, do send me a private message :D

So, what you're both saying is that OnStar is going to be okay, right?

I resisted the urge to post something very similar to Coastie's, having spotted the sarcasm in exm's entry.
