How many of you are seeing problems with your antennas falling off after a digital upgrade?
We are having issues with some antennas falling off and I am trying to get this issue addressed with the supplier of these parts.
The ones I have had are due to the antenna falling off the adhesive, not the adhesive falling off the glass.

Please post a link to this poll in your favorite topic, I need all the data I can get so I can address this issue with GM.

Thank you.

If my poll thing doesn't work, please just post about your experience.

 ewill...I think I saw in the OnStar site that some upgrades require a whole antenna and base replacement while others require only a screw-on antenna mast. We gotta ask the dealer which procedure was performed......"fac et spera"....get the facts (or, more literally, do it) and hope.

Very good, Submariner - actually 'Do and Hope' is the more correct usage (it's the family motto)... When did you serve? I retired in '05 after 26 years as an FCCS(SW)...

What year and model are we talking about? I'm way behind man! I didn't even know there was an upgrade. Onstar told me they were switching to digital, and I would get a years free service..........as long as I bought a new Cadillac!!! Fill me in please my antenna just lies flat against the glass.

For the most part the upgrades are available for '02-'05 depending on the model.
If your car is not upgradable they send you a letter offering you a year of free service if you buy a new GM vehicle, that is probably what they told you.

Had mine done today - appears that they just swapped out the mast & left the base mount alone. No problems...and it's sure nice to have better dialing input capability...:)

There is a design difference between the analog base and coupler and the digital antenna base and coupler.
If those parts are not changed there could be a system performance issue in the future.
The bulletin contains specific instructions on replacing those parts, if the dealer is not following those procedures they are not doing it properly.
I am not a frequency specialist so I am not sure how big of a problem it would be but I was told by OnStar not to put an old style base or coupler on a digital system and that if I had issues I had to obtain a replacement part from our supplier.

The only one that gets only a new screw on mast is Escalade due to its design.
Anything with a glass mount antenna should get both parts, anything less is a sign of laziness on your dealer technician's part and should be brought to the attention of the dealership management.

To me that is akin to them replacing 7 spark plugs out of 8 because one was "okay" and still charging you for the 8th plug.

Call me harsh... ;)

No, that is one reason why the parts need to be properly matched.

Are you a service manager or tech or service rep. I like your attitude about doing things right. There are so many dealerships around that cut corners that it is really bothersome. Is this the attitude in your whole dealership or is it up to each tech to decide if they are going to do the right thing. I do really appreciate all the help you have given me in just the short time I've been here. If I ever get up your way, I'll have to stop in and buy you lunch.

I am a tech, I can't say I speak for everyone but a few of us try to do our best for sure.
Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks to those of you who participated.

I gave this information to some people (combined with other results I got on the web) and it turns out that they discovered the bases on the replacement antennas are too rigid. They don't flex to meet the curvature of the glass and if the adhesive is put on right it actually pulls to the glass and the base can fall off.
GM is redesigning this part and a new one will be available soon.
If the base falls off you'll likely get this new part.

I appreciate your input. Thanks to the forum community.

Although this thread looks cold - I have to weigh in on a couple of things. I had the upgrade completed on 08-15-07.
The Antenna fell off within 4 hours of installation, when I picked up the car after hours, it had already popped loose, not totally off. I returned the next morning on the way to work and the dealer Tech replaced it straight away.
Then while driving away I remembered that I had forgotten to tell them that the steering wheel phone switch was dead and that the display reads - No Phone Installed. I used the white button on the mirror to make the first all- back to the dealer. I'll be taking it in on Monday to see what the story is.
I had also had 90K service done - asked for them not to touch the wheels, but they did and somehow road vibration was back on the list. Got the wheels re-rotated and balanced today and the steering wheel vibration is 90% gone again. I miss the smooth as glass feel though.
Will the phone ever work again via the steering wheel switch?

LD, what kind of car do you have?
The "phone" option on some of the Devilles is actually not related to OnStar.
The "no phone installed" message is usually misleading and may be related to the way they configured your vehicle after they did the OnStar upgrade.
They should be able to fix that.
Tell them to review this document: PIC3396C

Be sure they replaced the antenna with the proper part.
The one from stock will likely be for an analog system. The one that came with the kit is designed to work with the digital hardware. They need to call Autocraft to be sure they have the correct replacement.

BTW, I got a call from GM and they told me that they are fixing this issue and the new kits are supposed to have a better antenna base in them that won't fall off.
We'll see.

I returned to the dealer and they replaced the one that was falling off- yest the adhesive is separating from the base.
The replacement did it also one week later, after I returned to have the steering wheel hand switch featrure restored - they did that, but then put the car through an automated car wash and the replacement is now broken loose at the base. Said I needed to returm next week for the replacement.
I am wishing I had left the car alone and given up onstar.
A bigger issue is at hand - the onstar signal is irratic and the audibility is now worse than a bad cell phone connetion.
When I make a call - the person on the other end can not understand me unless I pull over and stop on the side of the road. So, what is the point if I can't be driving, use the phone and be heard? And, I cant hear all of the conversation comming in to me. I called onstar and they suggested that I had the air conditioner on or radio on or I was in a bad cell zone. Well, NO to all and it is still a problem. The radio automatically turns off, and the Air has never been a problem before, and I was calling from the same route Iv'v driven for the past 4+ years.
Going back to the dealer on Monday!
If it can't be fixed - the it is MONEY Back Time and aloha Onstar!

Hi HTH,
I went back on Friday 08-23 and told them to use PIC3396C as you suggested.

I drive a 2002 DHS - very nice ride nearly loaded missing sun roof only, it has the top of line front seats and this makes all the diff in the world.

Anyway, I also related to them that I can't hold a conversation over the phone because the reception is cliping on both ends. Seems like the audio sensitivity isn't regulated. Folks from the other end of the call sound either like they are talking through water (muffled) or are shrill - the volume escalates during the call and hits ear peircing high pitches. I was on the control turning it down to hear them and then up so they could hear me. They tell me that most of my words are garbled and or missing. I verified this by calling on my cell phone, which is PITA to use while driving in comarison to using the car phone.

Picked the car up last evening and the antenna was parting from the adhesive, the Phone was working from the steering wheel - Thanks for the PIC number!

The audio transmission and reception is stil an issue.

I tested by calling cell phones (two) and land lines (two) with no change in results. I tested along one 30 mile route 3 times for 4-5 minutes total to see if things got better. On the smooth lane of the freeway, and on the rough lane, at a stop sign, and in a neighborhood. The best signal was at the stop sign.
I called Onstar and their suggestion was that I had to have the heater/air conditioner off, I was in a poor signal zone. Well, the analog system wasn't this tempermental.
Back to shop on Monday.

I'll mention the antenna and Autocraft.

Thanks for the wonderful support.
Peace be with you.

Well i have another question:

I was reading some of the other onstar upgrade posts and figured I'd go to onstar with my VIN and see what was up. I had gone to the dealer for the upgrade based on a letter gotten via the postal mail.

This is the Onstar digital upgrade search result (showing the last 8 like solicited from others):
....................................

Your VIN Result
You entered VIN *********2U232892

This is a dual-mode (analog/digital) vehicle with equipment that operates on both the analog and digital cellular networks. It will not require an upgrade in connection with the cellular industry's transition to the digital network.

Since this vehicle is capable of operating on the digital network, no action is required.
----------------------------------------------

So, should I have even gone in for an upgrade? What could have happened to make the onstar all goofy if it was ready as stated in the search noted above?
