I'm swapping out a '93 Northstar (the one with the 12mm inserts) with another '93. The first motor had engine oil cooler lines to the radiator; the second did not. Was the engine oil cooler a late production change?

........for '93 ??? This is out of my year group, but......does the '93 take 7.5 quarts of oil for a complete change ? If so, the earlier N*'s used oil not only for lubrication, but also for cooling in the valve cover area and the large lower block/main bearing areas. If you have the opportunity to install an OEM or similar cooler setup, it can only add to the engine life and reliability. (My '57 Jag took 16 (16) quarts of oil, and the cooling system was a joke.)

93 would be VIN 9 vs Y.
other years you need HD cooling.
ETC most years had the oil coolers. 00+ It may have been another option.

I put in another North* in my '93STS - same year engine - also had cooler line fittings. The oil cooler lines come out of the oil filter housing, turn to the right front corner & around to the cooler behind the grille.

Watch for chaffing!!!!!!!!!

I new, the stock cooler was way too small, so I replaced it with the same brand but twice as 'fat'. It used the same mounting holes.

The first time putting in oil, it took 9.5 qts.!! After that, almost 8 qts.

Is there any secret to removing the oil cooler? I bent mine (in my "totaled" but driveable '95 ETC) and it's leaking. Seems all I was doing was bending it while trying to loosen the fittings, and there's nothing above the fittings to grab on to. Thanks!

It's just undoing the fittings with a couple wrenches. You may have to hold one fitting while undoing the other. It should be as simple as that.

Make sure everything is nice and clean. Make it snug, ..don't over tighten?

I just got a 98 engine from an STS to put in my white 97 STS. The 98 is a VIN 9 LD9 engine (by the VIN and other markings on the rear pad on the block) but it didn't have provisions for an oil cooler, the 97 did. I just swapped the oil filter adapter from the 97 engine onto the 98 and I should be good to go.

Thanks, but...what I meant was there is no other place that I could see to place a second wrench to hold it while trying to loosen the fitting.

That's cool! My '97 ETC does not have that external oil cooler - in my car, my radiator has the trans cooler on the driver's side tank, and the engine oil cooler on the passenger side tank. I also have the PS cooler on the drivers side, in front of the AC condenser. I added an additional, external trans cooler, and guess where I put it? Right where your engine oil cooler is!

I don't think you need a tool to take those connectors apart, just grab the two plastic tabs that are sticking out of the threaded fitting and press them tight against the hose and the hose should pull right out of the threaded fitting with a little wiggling.
