Oil completely dry!

My 05 SRX has 33k miles and yesterday a message popped up and said check oil. Well, I checked it and NO OIL ON THE DIPSTICK. I had to put in 3 full quarts of oil. Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas why it would burn so much oil? I'm sure there's no leak because my garage floor is clean.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

V8 or V6??

It's considered "normal" for the Northstar to burn some oil but not alot, maybe a quart every 1500 or 2000 miles. When was the last time you changed it.

If its the V6 I dont know.
I put a quart and a half in last week but had not checked it in 7000 miles because the wife is driving the car now.
I changed it right after that shocker. I usually change it every 6000 with Mobil 1.
I had about 5% oil life left, never had let it get below 30% oil life before.

I have the V6.
My check engine light came on in my 04 V6. The vehicle was dogging big time. I took it to the dealer thinking it was an emission problem. I only had about 6,100 miles on the oil. The cam sensor was sensing low oil. They changed to oil and everything was good. I still had 35% oil life left at the time.
Duh......your supposed to check the oil!??!?!?!?! How embarassing.
I now change my oil on my 06 V8 at about 8K, reguadless of what the oil life monitor says. I have not experienced any oil usage in this vehicle.
After owning tons of cars with multiple engine types - almost 90% have always had a oil fill capacity of 5 quarts, My Taurus SHO was unusual with the Yamaha engine at 5.5 quarts. After reviewing specs on my 07 V8 - oil capacity is 8 quarts. If I read that right - then maybe whoever changed your oil last only put in 5 quarts. Maybe after a period you burned down a few ounces of that 5 quarts - and enough to trip the oil check light. Just a thought in the dark anyway...

Do you think it did any damage to the engine???

FYI on my 2 N*V8s: Mob 1 full synthetic now used in both, we check weekly
1) 2005 SRX N*V8 - 4625 mi since change/ 52% life left =~ 9,800 mi BC
always used Mob 1 FS per GM since new, none added BC
2) 1999 DeVille Concours - 4850 mi last change/ 3% life left =~5,000 mi
used Castrol GTX 10-30 until 5/2005 when switched to Mob 1 FS 10-30
used/ burned ~ 1 qt first change, none added since
Seems GM has recalibrated the sensor for full synthetic vs dino oil
We love both autos!!
Wait, there is a difference between your no-oil problem and my no-oil problem:

Your no-oil problem: Dashboard warned to "check oil"
My no-oil problem: No Warning.
Cadillac Style; even though it's scary, it's unlikely you did any damage, if you were just driving the car normally. Oil pressure is the big thing, and with still 5qts in the pan, that should have been no problem. Cornering at high loads or high-rpm running would be the danger areas.

You might want to post in Deville or DTS section of the forum, this is posted in the SRX section. However sounds like your alt may be failing.
Happened to me, but the oil light never came on. Burns a quart every 1,500 miles or so. Have 60K on V6.
