Does the GM oil change indicator go by miles, driving habits, or what? We've gone almost 6000 miles and the info center says we still have 30% oil life remaining. For the past 12 years or so, I've always followed a 5000 miles change interval with semi-synthetic oil (along with a tire rotation).

I don't know what kind of oil the Escalade came with, and, while our dealer will give "free" oil changes (provided the dealer sticker remains on the tailgate), the oil life indicator has to get down to 25% before they will do it.

It is not a mileage counter . There is also no oil condition sensor.
Based on software algorithm's. A computer continuously monitors engine-operating conditions.

Driving habits and climate play a part. Conservative driving and a warm climate could go 7000 to 12000 miles while a cold climate could be 3000.

If a change oil message is displayed the oil should be changed within 2 tank fills (600m)

If you choose to do your own keep all receipts and mileage. I always check the monitor to make sure it is reset after a change.

IMO I do 3000 and use Mobil 1 (Dexos), I also check levels every fill, I am sure this will start a debate but hey.

Fwiw I don't like dealer advertising -sticker- on my vehicles.

Mine is about a year old, the monitor noted needed oil change with 1,400 miles, just had done. Got the report on the XT5 with 700 miles and it
needs to be taken in for an oil change. Its free under the Cadillac maintenance so will have it done

mdsgu, please study this explanation of the early OLM systems. Written by one of our old members who was a GM Northstar Systems powertrain engineer. Later OLMs are even more sophisticated. And deadly accurate, even with a significant safety factor built in.

https://www.cadillacforums.com/cadillac-tech.html#oillife

If your driving habits are mostly highway oriented the OLM decrements pretty slowly - it's cold slow city driving that kills oil (life).

My 2002 STS easily goes to 7500 - 9000 miles and 20% on the OLM because we're rural and 75% of our driving is highway or Interstate - so I change the synthetic 5W-30 and WIX filter once a year.

If centexcad is changing oil at 1400 and 700 miles either something's very wrong, or the car sits at idle for extended periods.

The Escalade I’m driving seems to hit 20% around every 6200 miles. I’ve considered changing it around 4000 miles and not resetting the oil life so I can get a free one in another 4000 miles. But I haven’t followed through with that yet.

If you change the oil/filter every 4,000 miles you're throwing away money and resources.

With today's 'clean" gasolines and engine oil formulations a "modern" engine can go past 10 or 12 thousand miles on an oil change, no problem.

It's not 1954 any more, troops ......... (Now you know what the Kendall two fingers trademark means)

Nothing wrong. Both the cadillac's are strictly in town, 30 mph top, stop sign to stop sign. Seldom get up operating
temperature before a stop cool down. So yes they idle for extended periods, is a good reference. No not going to drive
someplace just to drive. Electric Cadillacs, will be all for that program. Tell people when I travel, want to set back and
leave the driving to someone else. ie: a tour.

BMW wanted the same for our 5'ers and M's. It was the annual low mileage oil changes. Which were covered under the free maintenance.
Moisture build up in oil. All the cars ran perfect no rough idles, or hesitations, that some would try to associate with city driving and no
open road.
