Going to be removing the 2nd row seats in the ESV today, as I'm going to be putting some bulky items in the back, and I think I could use the extra 6-8" of space the seat bottom takes up. Since the 2nd row has side air bags, I needed to pull the SIR fuse so I don't accidentally deploy the air bags. I found that seemingly unrelated items are effected by removing this fuse;

  • Rear view mirror no longer has power, so no temp display and direction. (this makes sense, as the passenger air bag status is displayed in the mirror)
  • Airbag light remains on in the dash (based on the service manual, this is normal)
  • Seat belt chimes/lights/warnings no longer appear

I had assumed the air bags would be on their own dedicated circuit, but it's interesting the other items that are tied to the air bag electronics.

Since owning this vehicle, I've had intermittent "Service Air Bag" messages in the DIC. Usually code B0026 for the driver's front loop (steering wheel air bag). GM documentation says to find connector C221, unplug it and plug it back in, and see what happens. Fortunately, there's very little documentation on where C221 is. After some Googling, there's a connector behind the drivers side kick panel, right behind the hood latch release. You will see a yellow connector right there. MAKE SURE THE CAR HAS BEEN OFF FOR AT LEAST A HALF HOUR! This allows all the air bag capacitors to power down, and you run less risk of blowing the air bag. I also disconnect the SIR fuse to be sure. I unplugged it, and plugged it back in, and the air bag light stayed off for 4+ months.

Then I forgot to turn off my dash cam before I went on vacation, and left it on for 6 days. Came back to a battery with low voltage (11.76 V...vehicle started without needing a jump). Now the light is back on :mad2: Will deal with it again this weekend after giving the alternator a few days to recharge the battery properly.
