My car came up with the check engine light today and a friend has an OBD II code reader. When we hooked it up to my car, the reader said link error.

Any ideas?

Will the OBD II work on the CTS (2004)?

Thanks!

He plugged it in, pressed scan (link). The tool then came back "Link Error"

How informed would one need to be in order to get a different result?

Pretty simple process at least on the plugging it in right?

Any other suggestions?

The OBDII system in the CTS is CAN enabled. If you don't have a compatible code scanner it won't work. The unit the dealer uses costs thousands.

My cheap Harbor Freight code reader (non-CAN) works on my '05, but a friend borrowed it for his '04, and got a link error as well. We borrowed a GM Tech 2 and had no problems. The Tech 2 CAN module was in the box, but we didn't use it.

Autozone (and probably other parts chains) will scan your car for free with a scanner that's much better than I have, but not as good as the GM tool.

Good luck.

thanks that's what I figured, it just wasn't one that would work on my car.

I have an appt to take it in to the dealer, no worries.

bdrex28--if you have OnStar, call them and ask about the check engine light codes. I believe the most common issue there is the gas cap isn't tight. Good luck.
