Nitrogen oxides form when your engine's running hotter than it should be. Hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about can tell you why and what to do about it.

When the combustion chamber is over 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, a reaction occurs that forms this gas. The combustion chamber temperatures are lowered by the addition of an inert gas. This is the job of the EGR valve, to allow inert exhaust gases back into the intake when certain conditions are met. Your EGR valve, or the passages leading to/from it may be clogged with carbon. Remove the valve, and check that it moves freely. Spray carbureator cleaner on the valve HOLDING THE VALVE RIGHT SIDE UP, as to prevent the solvent from running down into the valve, ruining it. Once the valve is clean, check the passages coming from the exhaust and heading to the intake. If they aren't too bad, you might be able to clean them with the solvent. If not, ask Stoneage about his method involving a coathanger.
