After reading how frequently posters change oil and the types they use, I got to wondering how often people are choosing synthetic oil to regular crude.

I for one, have never really been comfortable with synthetic and warrenties being on honored ( from my motorcycle experience) but maybe that's not a problem for the Lade.

I was wondering, if you use synthetic or not? And if so, which, why and do you feel you get a performance boost from it.

I've been using Redline for the last 3 years. I have been running 10,000 miles between changes. My '00 will use a quart in 10,000 miles. Although many will believe that is way to long to run oil, I believe that there is a lot of evidence out there that synthetic will last 12,000 miles or more. The thing that I have encountered is the the anti-friction additives or the viscosity agents don't last that long and my mpg will suffer about 1 to 1.5 mpg. So I am going to switch to a 5,000 mile change interval. I may switch to Mobil 1 as it is a lot easier to find that Redline. I have used Mobil 1 before and in other vehicles and have observed the same decline in mpg.

For the 1997 SDV I use: Mobil 1 synthetics for engine and tranny, K&N air and oil filters, LUCAS Synthetic Oil Stabilizer, LUCAS Fuel Treatment for UCL (upper cylinder lubrication) and LUCAS Transmission Fix - this last one goes into my 1988 SDV that just turned over 300,000 clicks.

I have been using nothing but synthetic oils since 1981, Red Line and now Amsoil, I have used it in 11 Corvette's, 2 Porsche's, 1 Ferrari, 26 Grand Cherokee's, 6 Suburbans, 3 BMW's to name a few, it protects better and lasts longer. :)

Wal-Mart's Supertech brand is made by Quaker State. I use it in every vehicle, and its been superb. Its also cheaper than some dino oils. On the Q45 I changed every 2800-3700 miles. On this Maxima I'll probably do 3500-4000 (because I care less about the car).

Shell Rotella T HEAVY DUTY 15W40. It's not synthetic:lildevil:
I use that in my '94 Devilles 4.9. My 2000 STS gets Mobil 1 5w-30 and my '79 Devilles 472 gets Mobil 1 as well 10w-30.

My '94 Deville and my STS get between 5k-7k miles between changes.

How do you know this? If this is indeed true, then that's excellent. I used Quaker State before I switched to Mobil 1. I think QS is an excellent Dino oil.

I used Mobil 1 in both my 85 and 93 Devilles as well as my 84 Nissan 4x4.

Using Dino in my 2003 Seville STS, brand unknown. Former owner says it's whatever the dealer put in there at last oil change. I just got the car, haven't had the opportunity to change the oil yet. Dunno if I'll be switching to M1 or sticking with Dino. I'll do the oil changes whenever the computer tells me to.

The 85 lasted until 238,000 miles (water pump seal had a catastrophic failure leading to a blown a head gasket and resulted in overheated engine). I changed it between 3,000 and 15,000 miles.

The 93 ran until 298,000 miles until tranny gave out. I changed it when the computer told me to. Engine still runs strong, burns no oil between changes. I still have it. Looking to sell it for the price of the S-rated tires which I just put on it.

84 Nissan 4x4 2.4L gas engine has 168,000 miles. I hardly drive it. Change the oil about once a year. It's a rust bucket, but it's fun to drive, and I don't care about door dings. It's the vehicle you'd park your Caddy far away from! :)

On the caddy i change it about every 5k. At the dealer or til about 10% on the display. I have a 100k warranty and putting in synthetic is a waste for this vehicle. For the cobra i run synthetic for the power and for the protection of a super charged motor.
