Re: total or approx production number of Northstar engines ?
1993-2000 There was approx. 1.05 Million produced, i have been unable to acquire any information from 2001-2010 , seems like GM likes to have tight wraps on there numbers for some reason.. would like to know but from a rough guess considering in 2004 the northstar "Phased" out a bit with the V6 and the LS engine series coming in to play, im thinking about another million. so give or take the 2 million mark but thats a pretty rough estimate.
Re: total or approx production number of Northstar engines ?
Someone with a lot of time and a dealer subscription to CompNine could run a slew of different model VINs and come up with a ballpark figure for FWD Northstar production - for 2002 model year there were 11,440 STS built - so factor in the other Northstar models for that year alone and you get to some pretty impressive figures.
2 million engines, ??? 30,000 ??? head gasket failures = your chances are about 1.5%. ..................Sure, the failure figure is a complete wildass guess - but it shows just how insignificant the chances are - outside of a fixit forum. (Heck - 50,000 failures would be 2.5% chance !)
That's a tad less than the chances of your being hit by lightning in the U.S. !! (1/500,000)
Re: total or approx production number of Northstar engines ?
I think if you where interested enough you could probably look up the production or sales numbers for each model for each year (just like Sub came up with the number for '02 STS's) and do the math .
2010 was the last year of engine production at the Livonia, Michigan engine plant, but enough were produced to use in some 2011 model Cadillacs.
We have totalled Northstar Engine production from 1993 Onward. Obviously crate engines, Shelby 4.0's, warranty replacement engines are not counted in these totals.
Complete Total Northstars (4.6 only) 1993-2009: 1,806,961 (2010/11 years not accounted for)
Oldsmobile Aurora:
1995 - 47,823
1996 - 24,133
1997 - 27,927
1998 - 25,721
1999 - 19,635
2000 - Not produced that year
2001 - 14,575
2002 - 1,672
2003 - N/A
--------------------
Total (4.0L): 161,486
Total Northstar Engine figures: 4.0 & 4.6 : 1,968,447. Some years are not accounted for in this total.
Mods please make this a sticky if you deem it worthy. Re: total or approx production number of Northstar engines ?
I sticky'd it and merged the parent thread.
Post #4 - my guess of 2 million engines was pretty damn close, as it turns out. A pile of 2,000,000 Northstars is pretty big.
Evrett, Thanks for the many hours of gut work.
Troops, this is NOT a "question" thread - it's a "fact" thread. If there are fixit or maintenance questions, please post in the proper forum - don't dilute this thread with irrelevant questions. Thanks.
The 8 question and discussion posts that hijacked the OP's thread have been moved to their own thread - "Northstar head bolt hole thread repair options", last post about 27 February 2014.
Was more than happy to , Yours and Jake's Idea though
