i think it should be added that in 96 they changed to a 1.2mm top ring instead of the old 1.5 top ring on the pistons

I think it should be added that 93-95 used different pistons/rings than the 96-99. They changed the top ring groove from 1.5 to 1.2mm in 96.

Hello all, I have a 2001 DTS with a VIN 9 that has a blown HG and was able to source a 2008 Northstar engine/trans which is out of a VIN 9 car and is an L37, will this swap over to my 01 with no problems? Thanks!

I haven't had the pleasure of working on a Northstar of that era yet. They only come to me when they have blown HGs. 2006 has been the newest I've had in pieces. The differences are minor from 01-06. Mostly the valve covers, coil cassettes, coolant crossover, addition of an extra knock sensor, oil filter mount. I'm fairly certain it will swap in with some minor modifications; but would ask that any other techs who have worked on a 2008 chime in with additional information.

Thanks and good luck! :)

Can I replace my 2000 Deville Northstar, with blown head gasket, with my 1995 STS Northstar? From what I've read, it will bolt up but will not run. Please tell me if this is correct. I just want to be sure. Thanks.

Actually, the 2000 and later roller cam engine is VERY, VERY different from the old 1995 flat-tappet version. Everything is different - mechanical, electrical, electronics, powertrain controls.

No, the swap won't work.

Re: 4.6 from 2004 deville to 2002 deville?

Your 1999 STS (Seville Touring Sedan) uses the VIN 9 powertrain.

The 8th character of the VIN is the powertrain designation.

Y is the 275 hp, 3.11 final drive cruise/economy powertrain.

9 is the 300 hp, 3.71 final drive performance powertrain.

You must swap 9 for 9 and Y for Y - many, many vehicle and powertrain programming and suspension/sensor/monitoring differences.

For a 1999 STS (VIN 9) you can rebuild a 1998/1999 engine (and a 1996/1997 might work, too). There was a radical sensor/mechanical change, along with conversion to OBD-II, for the 1996 engine. A 2000 or later will not work in a 1999 or earlier FWD Cadillac - too many large differences in everything from electrical connectors to ignition systems to sensors to the entire engine mechanically.

Deville, base, DHS, Eldorado ESC and SLS - VIN Y. You need to look at he VIN for Concours.
(Seville) STS, Deville Touring Sedan (a real DTS), and Eldorado ETC used the VIN 9.

Ok so I may have looked passed the post but does anyone know if a 2008 VIN Y engine will fit a 2006 VIN Y without any differences? 2006 Cadillac DTS

Another mechanic who eats and breathes Northstars is Joe Blau at Midwest Cadillac in Palatine, Illinois.

He's a busy man, so don't be pissed if he seems rushed.

carol4611, Your post has been moved to the later model "STS" forum. Your stability question has nothing to do with Engines; Northstar and even less to do with engine interchangeability.

You need to take the car to a large parts store and ask them to scan it for trouble codes. Then post the results in STS.

I've searched and read this threat as well as I can but don't find any info on putting a 2004 Deville NS into a 2005 Deville.

I've read that the:

The '04 and '05 Northstar engines are essentially the same, so if the '04 will work then the '05 should work as well. However, you may have to swap the PCM also, because I believe the timing and fueling parameters are slightly different between the 2005+ and the 2000-04 VIN 9 engines.

for the 2005 4T80E got an upgrade to have EC3 - electronically controlled torque converter clutch, with various new parts like valve body and new PCM calibrations.

Any advice of what is needed to get a 2004 swapped into a 2005 and get it running?

Great knowledge in here, thank you guys!!
Just to be on the same side - what parts can be used from Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0 engines on Cadillac Northstars, if any? Heads? Camshafts? Whole engine, maybe? :)
read through all thread, found nothing about Auroras...
