Can anyone tell me how to identify the year and version of a used Northstar engine from the number stamped on the casing tag: 6TU299231 ?

That is the VIN Derivative plate and it decodes as follows:
6=Cadillac
T=1996
U=Hamtramck Plant
299231=production sequence number

Hi,

I have a '99 STS and I was told it had an engine from a newer Cadillac installed. How can I tell what year and model the engine came from? The number on the tag at the rear of the engine has the following: 619MLNHOWC2.... then to the right a 9ML, then at the bottom 24209619.

Thanks

Katshot; you should know that if you give a man a fish you feed him for the day, if you teach him to fish you feed him for life.

It's not a "plate' - it's a machined pad on the right side of the engine bloc, toward the front. The VIN derivative is either stamped or etched into the pad.

You really need the car up on a lift ............
