I'm finally looking to take my first steps down the road of getting some car grime under my fingernails. After seeing the recent thread on DIY hub painting, I'm going to man-up and give it a shot.

But, I'm a car-mod-virgin :yup: - I don't even have a jack and I have squat for tools other than the usual home stuff. So, as a total green noob, I'm looking for recommendations on what to get or what to steer clear of. Any other "oh, you'll want one of these..." tips would be greatly appreciated too.

I'm only looking to visit the first level of mod Hades, but I expect once I start taking things apart, it's going to be the beginning of a long descent... give it about 2 weeks and I'll be asking how to change the oil :bonkers:

(ps I let my membership expire a month or so ago, but couldn't ask for advice with a clean conscience without re-upping for another year - done! :thumbsup

I got one like this with a couple jackstands in a package deal for about $130can. I like the low height of the lifting end when at its lowest position..... leaves a bit to be desired in total height but we're not working on 1 ton trucks here....

I just grabbed a jack kit from Sears...3 ton jack and two 3 ton jack stands was really cheap, like $60 or $70 I think.

It has worked great for me, no complaints.

I saw those jack puck things on this forum somewhere -- he might find those helpful. I've been thinking about getting some myself when I find them again....

I would get a 3 ton jack minimum. You may not need anything that heavy now but you don't know what you'll own 10 years from now and just about any jack should last that long as long as you don't abuse it. I got a cheap one at Harbor Freight and it has worked well. I would go to Sears and get one of their kits to start with for tools. Buying a set will save you some money on the front end. I would start with something like one of these depending on what you can afford and you can add on as you get more money and need more specific tools. I like Craftsman tools because if they break you can take them replaced for free. I have a buddy who buys broken tools from flea markets and takes them back and exchanges them for new ones.

I had my girlfriend pick me up a 2 1/2 ton floorjack from sears for $25, but it was on black friday so you may have to wait a while.

by the way: since were on this topic and I have yet to jack the V up with a floorjack, where is the best place to jack her up (front, and rear) sorry if i kinda hijacked but we were on the topic of jacks

The jacking points for the front end are right where these jack stands are placed:

There are little triangles on the rocker panels that shown their locations. The rear ones are only about 2 inches in from the rocker.

There are more places you can jack, but those are the main ones.
