The duckies are actually merlettes, a bird similar to a martin.
The were arranged in groups of three to represent the Holy Trinity.
In heraldry, they were awarded to a knight that made significant contributions in the crusades.
The black birds against a gold background supposedly denoted wisdom, riches and cleverness, "ideal qualities for the adventurous and zealous Christian Knights."
