Hey All! I'm thinking of purchasing a 2013 ATS4 2.0T (performance package) that I test drove on Saturday, but the more lurking I do around the forum, the more nervous I'm becoming. Are reliability issues pretty serious with this year of the ATS? I seem to be reading about a lot of engine issues (primarily piston related i.e. blowing motors). Similarly, I'm hearing some horror stories related to the electricals. The particular vehicle I'm looking at is certified so the extended warranty lends some comfort, and after obtaining the services history it doesn't seem to have a scary background. So, big question is, if you could do it all over again, would you?

Noted service history:

All look normal recalls and some little fixes. Tranfer case, Shutter replacement, not to bad. All looks pretty regular to me. Regular fixes and still under warranty.

Don't worry, half the engine issues on this forum are from one guy. I almost didn't buy mine because of him but so glad I did. My only issue so far is the moldy smelling AC. Besides that I love the car and very happy I made the purchase.

I see nothing major there it is mostly safety recall inspections and software reflashes.
Plus it already has the CUE customer satisfaction update.

2014 2.0T Luxury - definitely would do again - great car. And as was said above, the piston issues are way overemphasized on this forum. Search if you're interested, but be prepared to read a lot, some of it BS.

Consider getting the 3.6 V-6. It howel's. If you want to make it better add the after market super charger (400 hp).

if u live in cold climate (max temp at 80 or so), no worry about moldy ac.

Why take chances on the 2.0 (even though small possibility) if you can get a 3.6 that so far has not had any reported blown pistol (at least from this forum)? On top of that, the 3.6 feels and sounds more satisfying imo.

Thanks for the responses, fellas. I was looking at the 2.0T only because that's primarily what's available around me in Denver. The particular vehicle noted above had an MSRP of $49,700 and with the 20,000 miles on the clock we were able to agree on a price of $31,000 out the door. It's pretty hard to pass up at that price. Figure a tune would keep me happy, powerwise. I'm coming from a 2006 H/C/I GTO, so I'm trying to calm the go-fast bug.

I would definitely get my ATS again. I have had it for about a year and a half. Every car has a few bugs, and most get vastly overblown on forums like this.

As far as 2.0 Turbo vs 3.6, I thought the 3.6 ran better here in Ohio, but probably a different story in Denver. The turbo's forced induction will work better at altitude (thinner air) than a naturally aspirated larger engine. If I lived in Denver, I likely would have gotten the turbo motor.

It's got the extended 6 year / 70,000 mile bumper to bumper as a CPO vehicle. My fear is the post warranty phase as I tend to keep my cars for a very long time. Between all of the electronics and the engine issues, I was hesitant. But I think I'll be pulling the trigger today. Deal is tough to pass up with the CPO.

hmm,.. I thought that the bumper to bumper only lasts max at 4 year /50k. Any "extended" warranty will have a long list of exclusion?

First of all, welcome aboard. I'm relatively new as well and this is a great message board.

I came from a 2011 Camaro SS. You will miss the LS motor every day. It's not so much the power, its the sound/feel of it. The 2.0t is a little "lawnmower-ish."

I'm fairly happy with mine. Based on my budget and needs I still think I bought the right car and if I could go back, I would probably do it again. That said, if I had a higher budget or was willing to spend more money on maintenance, I would have bought a 3-series.

Had a 3-series, but bought a '13 V6 1 1/2 years ago. No issues, aside from one or two minor sensor things the dealer fixed for free. No moldy smell, either, and I live in Seattle. It's a fun, solid car- I'm really enjoying it. My only gripe is the depreciation, which you've wisely sidestepped ;-) Would definitely do it again, except maybe opt for a lease instead...

Well, I had a deposit on the car and went to pick it up today after it was cleaned/detailed. One of the first issues I noticed was a rather significant gap between the hood and grill that I chalked up to the aftermarket grill not fitting correctly. But on second inspection today, the gap extended to where the hood and bumper should align. Rather than sit flush, I could actually fit my fingers between. Popped the hood again and upon closer inspection there was, what I believe to be, primer residue after sanding. Car checked out with both CarFax and AutoCheck, but I just had a bad feeling and walked away. You can actually see the gap in the photos the dealership posted. Looks like I'll keep looking.
