I don't understand the need for it, but admit to never experiencing it.

Car and Driver are flat wrong and need to do their homework better BMW uses recordings in the cabin Cadillac does not what Cadillac does use is
BOSE ACTIVE SOUND MANAGEMENT...the difference is the sounds you hear are real and this is used because cars have gotten so quiet Cadillac is using triple sealed doors, laminated glass, quiet steel, active engine mounts, textile wheel liners, active noise canceling, as well as traditional sound deadening...and with all this they know people like to hear what the car is doing so with the bose system there are mics in the engine bay used to electronically get past all the anti noise tech.
whichever side you come down on the pro/cons of the Bose system know what's really happening and in my opinion it's
worlds better than BMW because we are starting with real noise and hearing real noise just indirectly
