new engine air and cabin air filters...

while doing some maintenance on my 2014 CTS4 Sport Wagon 3.0 I checked both the cabin air and engine air filters and decided I might need new ones soon...both of these were reported by Cadillac over the period of my ownership and during the warranty period to have been replaced every time they did an oil change...I never believed they were changed only thinking they were checked...

a little over a year ago I checked both of these within a couple months of seeing that my Cadillac dealership had reported they were changed and found the cabin air filter needed replacement (not terrible but not the clean, white appearance of new) and the engine filter received a shake out but appeared to still be serviceable...when trying to buy a new cabin filter on my own, I couldn't source one in stock OEM so I made due with a cheap STP brand as I also wanted to try any benefits that might arise from replacing the white particular MicronAir OEM with a charcoal impregnated filter...I reported on this Forum that the STP seemed to have far less pleats (as I also see on any of the charcoal type cabin air filters) and was significantly lighter than the OEM MicronAir

so after about 13 plus months with the STP brand charcoal cabin air filter I can report that upon inspection it appeared to look much as it did when I bought it and that it did not have any foul odor to it but I can also report that it did not seem to have any positive affect on odors entering the cabin of my CTS as I have on rare occasion still smelled the musty, air conditioning smell despite having AfterBlow activated as well...

I'll probably wait until nicer weather than we are receiving in ChicagoLand to make the filter changes since both filters are slightly dirty but not really dirty enough to make me replace them now but thought I'd share in case anyone was trying to decide on what cabin air filter to but...further...some searching of this Forum seems to show that AC Delco, WIX cabin air filters are made by MicronAir and are OEM...

As to the engine air filter, I found no markings showing who made this for AC Delco other than the one I bought is also OEM and has the light blue, rubber like surround and white paper pleats and appears to be of good quality...

as always, YMMV and good luck with your choice

I use Fram CF10371 with, ARM & HAMMER™3 baking soda and carbon embedded in the filter media.
I used to buy it from Walmart but they don't carry it anymore.
Most of the time I have my HVAC on air recirculate so the filter last a long time.

Please be aware that the carbon impregnated filter will do nothing about smells already in your car. They will only help filter out MOST of any noxious fumes that you may be getting. Nothing is 100%... But certainly does help over standard filters.

Were you charged for the filters at each oil change? If not, then they just checked them. There are no free parts at a Cadillac dealership.

I was still under the original bumper to bumper and part of the warranty is replacement of filters should it need them replaced...I agree that they were just checked but the work sheet stated replaced...perhaps they took them out and then replaced them back???...:D

s'funny that you guys thought I thought that charcoal impregnated filters would act as an air freshener rather than just cleaning the air coming in to the system...

I love this place!

If you weren't charged for a filter, I'd be willing to bet that the tech listed them as replaced so they could log more time against servicing your vehicle.
What does the employee do with that extra time? He spends it at the service counter attempting to charm his way into the cashier's pants.

maybe the warranty was different in 2014 but the 4 year/50K warranty covered oil changes and oil/air/cabin air filter changes when required...

anyway...I do believe they checked the cabin air as I found the rubber hood insulation not replaced or perhaps replaced poorly ;) ...maybe that's what they meant by replaced... :D

wheres the cabin air filter located? I want to check mine since i don't take my car to the stealership for oil changes anymore. I let my friend at Tires Plus do that (plus, it's right down the street from where i work).

I could always tell that they attempted to look at it at the dealership as the rubber hood gasket was never all the way back on...good luck with yours wcthunder...I'm curious to see how yours looks when you get to it...

I changed one on my sister's new to her (in 2018) Corolla with 120K miles on it...when I removed it the filter looked to have been in there a long time and had seeds, nuts, leaves as well as loaded with dirt...

I'm not sure if her's was original to the car but it was an OEM filter and everything else on the car that could be serviced was different from OEM...

I'm not sure it would help much but perhaps in the short run...Lysol spray might be better but I don't think you are serious with the smile emoji anyway...I'd just replace it with a new filter...

Replaced the cabin air filters in the Buick & Caddy this weekend; they were due.
Interesting to note, my newest and most expensive vehicle ('13 Tahoe LTZ) DOES NOT have one.
There is a retrofit kit available where you basically cut a hole in the HVAC system, add a "door" and filter.
Contemplating doing the mod.

1. Under the old 4 year 50k factory warranty and maintenance program, they were supposed to only replace the filters as per the maintenance schedule. I got my cabins at 22k and 45k, and got the engine at 45k. Your dealer must of been really nice and done them for free since GM will only pay for them at those intervals. However, to be honest, those things don't cost the dealer that much, they probably buy them for like $5 and charge GM like $50 to swap them (and charge you like $100 after the program is over).

2. I have used both the Fram cabin filter as well as the OEM ones, I did not notice any difference. I go with whichever is cheaper. For the engine filter I have only swapped it once since the maintenance program ended and went with the OEM one.

3. Is it ok to swap out the filters more frequently than scheduled on the maintenance? I heard somewhere changing the engine filter too often can actually be worse for the car.

4. If you are tasting the hooker's spit, you are definitely doing something wrong.

I think from my own investigations that my dealership wasn't really putting new filters in every time they seemingly listed they were...I did have a good rapport with my service advisor but the dealership experience ended for me when the warranty ended unless it becomes something I can't do or my trusted independent mechanics can't do...

I have the OEM filters ready to go on this Summer or so as mine aren't too bad yet but should be changed before next Winter...

I wouldn't really worry too much about changing your air filters too often...peace of mind is a good thing usually for both you and your car...

I'm like you as far as the stealership/warranty relationship is concern. Unless it's something major (engine, tranny or computer) or a "cadillac" issue. I don't bother with them. Luckily, I've been having no problems,
