I just picked up my 2009 CTS and wanted to know if the car should of been waxed by the dealer? Is it true that a new car should not be waxed for several months because the paint needs to breath? Is this BS or should the car be waxed?

Many moons ago, people advised to wait 6 months. Call any gm dealership with the last 8 of your vin. Ask for Manufact date. Might as well ask for the complete 2 page VIS report, showing all options spelled out. Keep it in your files. That will be useful when you sell car.

Don't worry, it won't hurt your car's finish. Remember, that paint has been curing for weeks from the time it was painted to the time it arrived at your dealership.

I picked up my Vette at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. They immediately detailed car with C Magic. After a few washings I waxed the car with Zymoil. I would rather have a good layer of wax on the finish to protect it from the elements. The finish is great after 1 1/2 years.

today's paint is worlds better. Wax is fine early. polish may need some extra time...
There is a little leeway here, too. Some polishes are pure polishes, like #3 and #7 from Meg's. They are actually designed to be used on fresh paint. They dont have cleaners or abbrasives. But if the polish has abbrasives or strong chemical cleaners, it would probably be a bad idea to use them.

That being said, Id be very surprised if factory paint isn't cured fully by the time it gets to your door. I guess it might depend on how far you are from the factory too...

Purely curious, which Zymol did you use? I use to love their waxs, but they company is very hard to deal with. I use Swissvax now. You can get some really good quality cheaper waxes, like P21s 100% or Blackfire Concours wax, or even Pinnacle Souveran.

I use the Orginal Formula Zymol Cleaner Wax, it's comes in the aqua colored bottle.

Over the years I've tried just about all the wax/polish products on the market. Zymol, IMO, it the very best. I haven't found a product that brings out the color any better. Great glossy shine and lasting protection. One must follow the directions on the bottle to get optimum results.

Don't have to special order it either...it's avaliable at Wal Mart or any auto parts store.

Hi AJC,

I agree with others, the paint is fully cured when vehicle arrives at your local Cadillac dealership. I prefer a pure polymer, such as REJEX or my favorite ZAINO Z2-Pro, rather than a wax. If your dealer, like mine, already waxed your CTS before delivery, you can later remove the wax by thoroughly washing with original blue Dawn dishwashing liquid, and then apply whatever product(s) you choose.

Right...if recurring applications of wax is your preferred method of longterm exterior care, then there's probably no reason to remove your dealer's first wax.

I removed wax from my CTS because I wanted to apply ZAINO Z2-Pro polymer directly to the factory clearcoat for a durable, clear-as-glass, high-gloss, wet-look shine. In my opinion, no wax or polish can equal the appearance and longevity of a polymer (REJEX and ZAINO have been discussed at great length elsewhere on this forum).

I made of point of telling them not to wax or do anything to the paint on my car. I just do not trust them to care as much about the vehicle as I do. Go into anyone of those areas of the dealer and you will find mostly younger people doing the work which suggests little experience in my opinion. A few years ago I was driving thru the lot of a local Ford dealer and they were washing new cars. They had hoses strung our for hundreds of feet and young high school looking kids with those big truck wash brushes (look like a floor broom) washing the new cars and other hosing them off. If you would have seen that, you would never buy a vehicle from that dealer. Also a local GMC-B-P dealer started to offer free car washes for customer every Sat and the work was done by a local high school band team members or something along those lines. Well it back fired big time for the dealer as lots of customers complained about the paint being scratched or just plain half a$$ed washes. Seems they used the same wash buckets and sponges over and over again grinding grit into the finish.

I never trust the dealer to do it.

What would be the best wax to use for my new CTS? I like a wax that comes off easily.
There's a lot of great products that produce excellent results, I don't believe there's any one product that actually is the best. Just make sure it's clear coat safe.

I have always favored Zymol. You can pick it up at Wal Mart. Follow the instructions and you'll get outstanding results. Have fun.

I agree. Some dealership's detail departments are a real disaster. However, many do take pride in their work and do professional work with professional people.

One way to check up on the quality of their work is to take a close look at the car's they have on display, outside and in the showroom. The guys that prep these car's are usually the same folks that will do yours.
