New CT6 owner - my first Cadillac

I just purchased a CPO 2020 CT6 Premium Luxury AWD 3.6 from the local Cadillac dealer with 41K miles. It was originally purchased from the same Cadillac dealer. It’s a one owner car with a solid service history and no accidents. I paid $40K for it. It’s fully loaded with the only additional options being Stellar Black Metallic Paint, Rear Spoiler and Splash Guards and Interior Protection Package. The car is super clean other than a few surface scratches and small paint chips in the typical places.
I have always wanted a Cadillac ever since my parents bought their first Caddy when I was in Junior High (‘79 Coupe DeVille). I learned to drive in that car and have loved Cadillacs ever since. I have attached a photo I found of the exact car (it’s an amazing survivor that someone was kind enough to share their photos of). I have also attached a photo of my (new to me) CT6.
I have been waiting a LONG time to finally own my 1st Cadillac so I’m absolutely over the moon to finally have one. I’ve been looking at them / test driving them / researching them and very seriously considering a purchase for 5 years now. I have been a dyed-in-the-wool Honda owner for the past decade but I could never shake my deep-rooted love of Cadillacs. I finally took the plunge on Wednesday and turned loose of my dearly beloved 2021 Accord Touring for this CT6. My focus since 2020 has been a new CT5V (non Blackwing) but I just can’t justify to +$65K price tag. I therefore recently decided to go the used route. I specifically want a large sedan that also has a very engaging driving experience. The CT5Vs are quite engaging to drive but a bit cramped if I’m being honest. The CT6’s always caught my eye but, for some reason, I never drove one. After binge-watching every YouTube review and reading every article on the internet that I could find about the CT6, it seemed that the CT6 might be closer to what I was looking for than the CT5.
When I test drove the one I just bought, I was overjoyed to find it to be exactly what I was looking for. Though it doesn’t have the 4.2 V8 or the 3.0 TT, I find that the 3.6 with the 10 speed auto and the AWD/Rear Wheel Steering/Magna Ride delivers quite a satisfying driving experience.

Ok, I’ve blathered enough…as you may be able to tell, I’m pretty darn excited about the whole thing. I’m more than a little bit nervous about the quality / longevity and hoping that the brand doesn’t let me down (I’m very spoiled by Honda’s legendary quality and reliability). But I know that luxury / speciality cars of any sort, by virtue of what they are, will never have the consistency of a mass-market Honda or Toyota.
Thanks for letting me share my story- I hope it will be interesting for someone to read.

Another welcome to the Cadillac Forum. And, good to hear of yet another immeasurably intelligent bloke joining the ranks of our fair zoo. That sistership of your parent's coupe showed their exemplary taste, as well!

After just another year to finish payments on my wife's bought-new SUV I'll be cranking up my interest in pretty much mimicking your scheme, even down to the year and powertrain. And the most sought-after features. I'm 'Follow'-ing now, and at least in small part in finding whether you've eventually tired of your new ride and looking to part with it. j/k, - no I'm not.

Congrats and welcome! I too, have a love for that early generation of Cadillac Coupe Deville‘s (as well as the previous body style with fender skirts) that you once owned and drove. I owned similar cars when I first started driving, although in the Buick category since I could never quite afford the Cadillac variants.

I stayed with mostly owning GM‘s over the years, owning an Oldsmobile Aurora (great car) then getting into the crossover SUVs for a while when our kids were young. I knew I wanted to get back into a sport luxury sedan for our last car, and was seriously researching the Maserati Quattroporte until I was finally convinced against it because of their expensive maintenance and overall vanilla interiors. So I circled back to Cadillac, and found the CT6 as you did… Although I took a slightly different path. 😉

I researched and shopped online for almost a year (much of my shopping saga is documented here as I’ve always been a big fan of automotive forums and joined early) before finding and buying my CPO one owner 2019 Premium Luxury with 33K miles on it… Having been traded in at a Subaru dealership, of all places! It had every feature I had been looking for, including Super Cruise, which I absolutely LOVE. I did have a few items repaired under warranty (so it was great to have that for a while) but otherwise it’s been nothing but a joy to own and drive for about 1.5 years now — just passed 55K miles yesterday!

[Hmmm, silently 'Follow'-ing that scottydl up there as well now]

Seriously, just consider the coup in scoring a Cadillac, just about any Cadillac, that's been owned (not to mention maintained) by a fellow member on here.

@Gottroccaddy Congrats on a gorgeous car and welcome to the forum.

IMO the 2019/2020 refresh made an already handsome car phenomenally gorgeous. The scale (size) is perfect for the design.

I searched high and low for a CPO 2019 CT6 Sport back in 2022 and 2023 and gave up and settled for a 2023 CT5-V. A year plus in the market and the sole example I found was an overpriced but low mileage Sport. I would have dug deep into the wallet for it but it had been previously owned by a chain smoker. My experience is that you can never get rid of that odor.

Sorry your search for a good CT6 didn’t pan out but I’ll bet you love your CT5V nonetheless. I LOVE that car in Velocity Red with the Satin Graphite Rims. I just test drove a ‘25 in Typhoon Metallic (Green) paint which was also super sharp. Alas, a new one wasn’t in my budget and, as it turns out, the CT6 really floats by boat just as well.

Northern-,
I would have dug deep into the wallet for it but it had been previously owned by a chain smoker. My experience is that you can never get rid of that odor.

Just for ref:
My son lapsed into the ranks of mini-vans of the earth after his new wife's Prius finally expired (not before 230k though), and his growing family outsized his Altima. He just couldn't pass up a v. low mile fully optioned '17 Grand Caravan. But it REEKED of cig smell. So, enough YouTubes and he bought a rolling steam cleaner, and the Before-After really impressed me. In the 5 years he's had it, if anything it smells even nicer and claims no added work since the 5 top-bottom front-back cleanings he did initially.

And he says that thing has paid for itself twice over with musty basement rain-leaked carpet, sick dog puke/poop, etc.

My guilty pleasure is auto detailing. When the weather is good (sadly, only a few months of the year here in the NorthEastern US 😢) I’m always outside cleaning one part of our fleet. Can you tell me what steam cleaneryour son purchased? I’m interested (at some point) in adding one to my slowly growing arsenal of products and tools. Thanks 🙏

I have a 2020 CT6 Luxury in red. The only warranty work I have had done was a thermostat replacement, which was covered under the powertrain warranty since I'm outside of the bumper to bumper warranty. The car is a pleasure to drive and the seats are very comfortable. I also like having a car that you don't see everyday in the wild.

To continue my thought about Blackstone, I always got the extra testing to see about my oil life. They always recommended me to "go longer" between changes up to 11,000 miles. I ended up usually changing my oil around the 7500 mile mark based upon their recommendations. I just couldn't go longer - personal preference.

Congratulations on your purchase! That's a beautiful CT6. I especially love the wheels. Like you, I learned to drive a Cadillac, but my parents had a 1975 Eldorado convertible in Emberust Firemist. Luckily the top was down when I had to back out of the driveway the first time. The blind spots were crazy on that car. I've been a Cadillac fan ever since.

  • 1971 Eldorado Coupe (Dad said drive this to high school or walk)
  • Lots of Pontiacs
  • 2012 CTS
  • 2014 CTS
  • 2017 CT6
  • 2021 CT5
  • 2019 CT6
  • 2023 CT4
  • 2024 CT5

Enjoy your new ride!

What a great story - your dad’s quote is hilarious! I love your red CT6 looking AMAZING out front of the dealer in the bright sun! I drive a lot for work and part of what I was looking for was a car that would help me relax and a very long (and often frustrating) day. After 1 week of ownership I can definitely say that my CT6 is doing EXACTLY this - I’m so thankful! And, when I want to get on it and let er’ rip, she hauls without any fanfare - just fast and smooth and agile. What a sleeper this car is- I’m in love !

I'll take a look tomorrow to see if I can find the cleaner I bought for one vehicle I had. It was a heluva cleaner and came highly recommended.

I just had to reply here.

The car that your parents owned has a very rare one year only option called the D’Marchand package. It was a pretty expensive option, adding about $3000 on top of a $9000 car. It’s estimated that no more than 200 people ordered the car with that package.

It had that color scheme you see, two toned black and silver with a red pin stripe separating them. The seats matched, gray with black inserts and a little bit of red piping separating the gray and black. Gray carpets. Probably a couple of more other things.

I know a bit about it because I actually owned a 79 Coupe Devile D’Marchand from around 2010 to 2020. What a head turner. I loved that car.

Enjoy your CT6.

Thank you so much for sharing all of this excellent detail. I was aware of this - I had stumbled across this same information you just shared a few years ago but couldn’t remember where I saw it and I was sad that I couldn’t recall the details. Now, thanks to you, I can refer back to this in the future!

My parents bought our example of this D’Marchande Coupe in 1985 at Boyle & Lane Cadillac in Pittsburgh, PA. I was 14 at the time and I remember going to the dealership with them to test drive and and purchase it. A friend of my dad’s (Dale Pinkerton) from our town (Butler, PA) told my dad about this car and advised him to grab it quick as it was a very special car in excellent condition. It might have even been Dale’s car that he had traded in. Dale owned the local Firestone Store in Butler, PA.

When we got to the dealership in Pittsburgh, they too told us that this was a very special car but we, being Cadillac noobs, just chocked this all up to salesmanship. However, Dale Pinkerton was my dad’s trusted friend so we felt reasonably assured that it was in fact at least a good car to get. 300,000 miles and nearly 20 years of nearly trouble-free life later, my dad had to finally bid this beautiful car goodbye as it’s life in the Northeast finally took its tole on the frame and it was deemed unsafe to continue driving. This car was an absolute BEAST - reliable, beautiful and comfortable. We loved it and drove it everywhere. As I said in my original post, I learned to drive in it and that really cemented my love of Cadillacs. My folks went on to own 2 more Cadillacs (‘81 Diesel Coupe DeVille and ‘93’ Sedan DeVille) and these too were amazing cars. I know that Diesel motor is rather notorious but let me tell you- we had ZERO issues with it. It had torque for DAYS, range like you cannot believe.

Wow, I can only imagine the excitement of being 14 and going into the dealership with your parents and checking out that car and then actually taking it home.

My first car was a hand-me-down Nissan but the first car that I ever actually purchased on my own was that Coupe Devile. I didn’t purchase it as a daily driver.

Speaking of reliability, it was up until only recently that a 1979 Deville, I’m not sure if it was a coupe, with that 425 held the record for the gas engine which traveled the most miles without an overhaul. The mileage was somewhere in the 500,000s.

I imagine the one that was more reliable was the carbureted one as EFI became optional in 1979 as well.
