Hi all,

I finally did it. here are some pictures of my 06 STS V8. It is maroon red (not sure of the official color code?) I made a foolish mistake however, I assumed since it was a V8 with nav and a sunroof that it was the 1SG package. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! It is indeed the 1SE package (Crap!) which means it is missing a few of the options I wanted - cooled seats, 3.42 rear end, and magnetic ride. (I dont see the option to change it in the nav, so I dont think it has magnetic ride.) The deal was so good, I could not afford to pass up however, it is an 2006 STS V8 with only 36k miles for $18,900. I mainly cared about nav, sunroof, V8, so it diddnt work out for me.

I did have one question however - can I swap out the rear end gears for 3.42s? (or higher, I really liked the 1SG I drove.) The main thing i feel is that it doesnt accelerate nearly as quickly as the 1SG I drove, and i liked that - ALOT. I cant believe Cadillac posts 0-60 times for the V8 STS when there are 3 different rear end options. This car sure doesnt feel like a 6 second 0-60.

Any other options Im missing out on by having 1SE? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ya, the 1SE is the base model. However, you did get a fantastic price, for a really great looking car that will last you a LONG time !
MANY of the 1SE's didn't even come with the nav. so consider yourself lucky there :)
Good luck with the car, and congratulations !

I am surprised you find it slow. I have the V8 N* without the 3.42 gears and it stays next to my 1992 Mustang GT which does 0-60 in slightly less than 6 seconds (track tested). I bet gears could be swapped, but may need to be done by dealer which means $$$ as the electronics are complicated, and not sure how easy to get speedometer/tach to be accurate. I would guess more than $1,000 for dealer to do this. Depends on if entire rear diff needs changing or simply the gears inside.

I work at a high performance domestic auto yard, and we have our own auto shop where we work on STS-Vs, CTS-Vs, etc, so labor wouldnt be a problem. Im more concerned with price, and making the new gears work without throwing a code. Anyone with more info? Thanks in advance.

Im suprised your gettig under 6 seconds in your non 3.42 northstar, thats great. The main thing I notice is how LONG first and second gear are. I love the feel of a very quick 0-60, and what I felt in the 1SG package felt amazing.

Beautiful Car. I wish I had your paint!

Other than that, yours is nearly a twin to my wife's car, except one model year. IMHO your gearing has more positives than negatives, maybe a tenth slower but quieter and more economical. Try Sport Mode around town (push shifter right but leave in Drive (sD).

Likewise on the MRC, my AWD with MRC approaches harsh even when set to Touring. I need the AWD in Wisconsin and wouldn't give up the ACC but you've got a sweet STS.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the kinds words!

Upon searching all of google and this web site, I cannot find one article about swaping the rear end gears, or the complete rear end.

Anyone have any info?

Nice car and all that.

I found out, a couple of Cadillacs ago, that you NEVER SETTLE for THIS car when you wanted THAT car! Now you're going spend time and money thying to make THIS car into THAT car, like you are starting to do now...I hope you can get over it...it made me miserable!:thepan:

Gaahhh.. so hateful .. :canttalk: Reminds me one engagement ago.. :cookoo: but there are certain circumstances to that.. 1) financially 2) oversight.. I remember back when I could have been driving a twin turbo Supra or the 30th Annv Z28 6 speed I had as a graduation present.. hindsight being 20/20 and researching I would still own a '97 LT4 30th Anniversary.. but sigh, young and as smart as I was not saavy enough I guess.. Still have the WS6 though :)

Oh, and performance breaks, heated steering wheel?

You can put in your RPO codes here: http://www.cadillacfaq.com/rpo/index.php

How many rear end options are there?
What's the advantages/disadvantages of them?
I have all my RPO codes saved in a text file. Thanks

There are 3 rear ends. The difference is ratio: 2.73, 3.23, and uhh 3.42 I believe. The difference is torque versus top speed.

I don't think changing the gear ratio would do much more than trhow off the speedometer & Nav. Maybe one of our friendly techs have run into something similar. Somepody has got to have done it with a auto parts recycler when a seal failed out of warranty.

Or maybe not?!?

Its surprising, I haven't found ONE thing on the entire internet. My work has a tech2, and all the support from our local GM dealerships. Id like just to see if I could get alittle bit more information before I dive in and screw everything up.

If I wanted to change the rear gears....
I would check with the guy that uses the TECH 2, and see if he knows how to reset the computers for the new gears.

If the answer is "YES"....then change them.
Changing rear gears ain't no big deal....the only problem I see, is getting all the computers to agree about the new gear ratio.

On a GM truck board I am on...they change gears all the time on the new trucks.
