I've looked throught the sticky section, googled it, and left message at local dealer (no return call yet). I tried the F1 & F6 like it said for the '04 but no luck. Would someone please help me and give me instructions for this. Thank you so much for any help.

I don't think you can on our year without a code puller, I think the f1 trick was 03/04 only. Autozone/O reilys pulls codes for free if there is one by you. Takes like 2 mins and they give you a print out

Went to O Reilys & Auto Zone today O Reilys said no codes and Auto Zone said they can't get codes unless the check engine light is on. So I went to Les Schwab and had them double check the suspension, tire rub, and whatever else they saw. They told me it sounds like the transmission. Called the big transmission shop around here and I'm waiting to hear back if they have the right tools to work on that car. And as if this isn't going bad enough I pulled off the engine cover only to find a mouse/rat ate the foam from the covers underside! So now I'm wondering if it maybe ate a wire or something.

The car seems to be getting progressively worse each day, oddly enough it runs smother in manual mode rather than auto! Soon as I find the answer I'll post them to maybe help the person and if you got any suggestions please let me know.

There are definitely codes that can exist without the SES light being on, i.e. suspension codes, so Autozone fed you you a big fat lie for sure. Though those will usually be accompanied by a "Service Stability System" message on the DIC.

And just an FYI, I have a 2004 CTS and cannot pull my own codes. Was told early 2004 builds retained this feature but it was done away with later in the year. You can get this feature back by installing a radio unit from a 2003/early 2004 build CTS.

Ok, here's a problem that I've noticed.

You said that you are having shifting problems, and that you went to auto parts store to pull any codes. Well here lays-in the problem. Most of those stores use the cheap scan tool, well because it's cheap for a free service that they provide.

What you need to pull transmission codes is an expensive code reader. Typically over $600 range. So going to a GM dealer will be able to help you with that. Their scan tool is well over $5,000, because they do programming too.

You are right on about going to the dealer for the codes. Curt, wouldn't it still have history codes too? Trying to decide if I should call a wrecker or limp it down there. I posted a picture of the part that is ticking some thing fierce under my profile albums (still new, couldn't get it in a post form) If anyone could tell me what that is, it just may be the root of all this. The part is located on the right side, up torwards the windshield between the battery and the motor. I don't have much experience working on these types of cars, sometimes I think they are smarter than me! Going to go find a manual tomorrow to help guide me. Thanks guys

The device that is making the ticking noise. Is completely normal for our engines. That is actually replacing the PVC. Since the 2.8 and the 3.6 doesn't have a PVC, this device basically does the valveing itself, if you will.

As stated above most places use a "generic" or low cost code reader.
These are designed primarily (and are so cheap because of it) to read only engine controller codes.
Most modern cars have over 20 computers on them and while most of them use the same protocols for communication, the scan tool has to be able to translate the data streams into the proper categories and display it.

If you have a transmission problem, that is handled by a separate controller from the ECM and if the trans has a problem that will set codes it will request the MIL from the ECM and the ECM will set a P0700.
Apart from that I am not sure what is going on but I thought I would comment on that portion of it anyway just for clarification.

And the factory scan tool is about $4,000 by the time you buy it and get what they can the CANdi module. That module is for GMLAN systems.
