The ELC does a 2 second preload and proveout just after key: ON.

To test the system get 2 assistants and 3 beers. Pop the trunk, turn the key ON and listen for the proveout cycle. If that's ok, y'all sit on the open trunk lip - the system should operate to level the car. If that's ok, all hop off the trunk lip and you listen for escaping air in the RR fenderwell as the system again levels the car. If that all checks out the system should be correctly operational. Occasionally the link rod will pop off of a height sensor or control arm.

Once you turn on the key and the system checks itself you should not hear it run again unless you change weight in the trunk or rear seat. If it runs periodically there's a slow air leak somewhere. You find a leak with a spray bottle of dish liquid mix - a leak will form bubbles at the source.

This LR sensor picture is from my 2002 and may be a bit different from yours, but it shows the height sensor and link rod.
