Hey guys. I was looking at all of these old cars behind my buddys house. The last one we made our way through the brush to was a Cadillac!

...Yeah, a Cadillac Coupe DeVille. I was wondering what engine it had in it, the 472 or 500? I don't know what year it is, can't pop the hood or anything, but it has the square headlights, and the V under the Cadillac trunk emblem. It's white. I was thinking it was probably a '75 or '76. Can't really tell anything else about it.

Basically I just thought it was kind of a cool find anyways.

The VIN plates are missing. I finally got the rusted hood latch to give to a hammer and got the hood open. It has the diamond shaped braces in the engine bay, if you guys know what I am talking about. It's RWD, TH400 trans. The engine is complete. It's pretty cool.

All CA cars have emisions stickers that started around that era, have no idea if they did that in Ark. Have you looked to see if there is a sticker still under the hood? They will usually ID the engine.

No sticker, no emissions in Arkansas. No A.I.R. system on this car.

Either way, I did soem research and am going to say it is a '75 Coupe DeVille. RWD, TH400. How many cubes was this thing packin'? Anyone know?

the square headlights are a dead give away, that is a '74-'76

In that case, it has the 500, 500 cubic inches, 8.2 Litres, the largest production V8 even to be put into a car.

What shape is the car in? if all rusted out and stuff, the 500 and TH400 are definitly worth saving.

That is one of the *worst* years for the 500... lotta emmissions, but really, it isn't that bad, the thing is still a beast, and when you rebuild it, you can beef it up for cheap, or surpass even the strongest factory 500's.

Okay, awesome. Just like my Eldo :)

The car is complete trash. The 500 and TH400 look great though. It definitly has had some work done, red cap and wires, etc. Last tag I can find on it was '94. I would love to pull the engine and tranny and do a rebuild on the engine and then stick it in an old Mustang or something, but 1) All of my $$$ are going into my 500/Eldorado, and 2) It sadly isn't my property.

If only...

1974 Devilles still had round headlights and were still equipped with the 472. '75 and '76 Devilles DID have square headlights and 500's.
All cars, from the factory, should have had an emissions sticker. I believe most Caddys of the 70's had them on/near the radiator support.
At the rear of the engine, just behind the intake manifold, on top of the bellhousing flange and next to the oil pressure sending unit, there will be some numbers cast into the block. These numbers can help to identify the engine. Most 1970-1976 472/500 engines had a series of numbers that ended in 5200.

Square lights, like everyone else is saying, mean it's a 500. Pay the guy a little cash to pull the motor and trans if you have somewhere to store it for a couple years, or hell just tell him to keep the car there as long as possible if you can't store it. These engines are getting harder and harder to find you know.

Alright guys, I guess I should give ya'll the full story.

There was this...umm..."nomadic" guy that had property and all behind my friends house, who live way out of town, on the highway. He drove around this huge Winebago thing with crazy castles and stuff painted on it.

Anyways, he's long gone, and we've checked out his place, which consists of POS structures, etc. He had about 3. Had makeshift walls, old desks, etc etc. It looks like a dump.

Well anyways he has all of these stripped cars. We think he stole or bought for cheap these cars, and parted them out and sold the parts. One is down to just the body on cinder blocks. The ones closer to the entrance are the worse stripped. There are 8 cars I think.

The Coupe DeVille is at the very back, even has the wheels, unmolested, just sunken into the ground. The 500 looks better than mine before I started. The carb is great, the vacuum thingy isn't worn out, etc etc. Seals are good, no large amount of oil/grease. It looks superb.

Well anyways, so none of this is techinically my friends' familys' property. Not like it maters, the guy is obviously not coming back. However, his step dad won't let us touch them. Because it isn't their property. They want to buy the land to have in which case they wouldn't mine me having what I wanted for free, but the city can't sell it to them without compensation, etc of the owner, but he is no where to be found.

So if I could, I would do just what dave said. I would have myself the engine and trans and store it to put in something when I had the time and $$$.

Either way, I'm going to get the A/C vents from it, mine are cracked/broken. If we get a good time when his step dad isn't around I am going to try to pull the dash apart and get the clock. Mine doesn't work, maybe this one would. Also I am going to pull the red/white lights that go on the door panel. I'm sure theres other things that I don't know of yet.

So anyways, that's the story, and the reason why I can't even pay for the engine and trans from this car. Next time I'll take some pictures and post them if you guys want.

Lux is right, I goofed on the date, '74 has round headlights, I was thinking '75 but typed '74....

Also, yeah, it *could* be a '77-'79.... swaure headlights, but they are a totally different body style... does the care look huge, massive, and could total a Greyhound bus if it hit it? then it is a '75/'76... if it is smaller and looks like the 80's Broughams, then it would be a '77-'79....with the 425, great engine in its own right, but the 472/500 seem to be the creame of the crop with everyone.

Haha of course I do. I've got the lift. Engine and trans could be out in about 1.5 hours taking them out all together. Freebie! :highfive:  lol
1.5 hours? You should be in a pit crew. You may get close to that value... just maybe, if you had an acetylene torch.

sure, get some pics....

eh, just go there for an hour each day, start getting stuff unpluged and such.

yank it out... when whoever says you can get what you want, say the engine was gone already.

When asked where you got that engine from, say the local u-pull-it yard just got the car in and the guy didn't want much for the engine :)
