Navigation Issue

So I had a DVD Nav system installed into my CTS today, I took it to the dealer to have it flashed and it worked fine, except the GPS signal was in and out so we moved the antenna.

When I got back I put a DVD in to test that out. Worked fine.

Next I put the Nav disc back in and it initialized but it put me in Los Angeles. Not a big problem except that I live in Boston.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Matt

There is a thread already on this topic, Tomm had a similar problem. I will see if I can find it...

Wierd.

I experienced a similar but much less severe incident. When I started my car and turned on the Nav, it was off by about 5 miles (not nearly as bad as LA / Boston though).

I simply powered it down, turned it back on, and everything was ok.

This only happened one time--so I never really thought much about it...
I have actually had my nav get lost four or five times. I'm driving along and all of a sudden, I'm somewhere else. Usually not anywhere near where I was. This gets rather inconvenient when you're actually using the nav because you don't know where you're going. I tried Onstar twice and they connected me to Cadillac, but one time they were no help and the second time the call was dropped. I tried to turn off the car and turn it on again, but that didn't fix it. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell it to reset itself?

1. Check your speed sensor wire to make sure you have a good connection. This wire is very thin and some wire taps do not get a good connection.

2. The Nav does not need a steady signal since it relies on your speed sensor and compass to move you along on the map. (Hence double check 1. Above) I had the non bose setup so I mounted my antenna below the center channel speaker hole and it had the best reception in that spot.

3. Double check your nav antenna to make sure the connection is not loose.

My original problem with my nav was because I purchased the navigation from California and I live in NJ. If the Nav turns off and back on 1000 miles or more away from its last location it will get lost and it will not put you on the map correctly. To fix this issue you can go into the setup and manually move the map to tell the nav where you are located. Once I did that everything worked and I have not had a problem since.

Tomm,

You think I need to check all that? Mine was a factory install.

No, If you car came standard with the NAV your harnesses etc. should be fine since there are no splices. You can just manually go into the setup and tell the Nav where you are but if this happens frequently I would go back to cadillac and tell them that you want the nav swapped.
Tomm,
Thanks for the help. I just want to make sure I understand what you are saying. I am looking at the GPS menu, and click on the Map Scroll button. I then move the Map from CA to MA and zoom in until I find a close proximity to my house.

But then I'm not sure how to get the system to change my location to that. When I enter it as my home, or store it as a point it goes back to Cali as soon as I back out of that menu.

Am I missing a step?

Thanks
Matt
Tomm, please ignore the last post. I found the option through the main menu function.

Howver now when I drive the map doesn't move. I am going to guess this is the speed sensor, but would appreciate confirmation before I pull everything out again.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, If you look on the screen and you are not moving the speed sensor cable is not making a good connection. If the nav does not get the signal that you are moving you will stay in the same place on the map.
It's very easy for the VSS wire splice to not make contact with the small brown VSS wire in the IP. Most splices are built for 20-24 gauge wire. The IP harness wires are even smaller than that. Sometimes the splice doesn't cut through the insulation enough to make contact with the copper.
Got it working today. It was indeed the connection between the VSS and the system. Thanks for the help guys.

Perhaps this is your cue to move to Los Angeles--I hear the weather is nice.
It seems strange to me that the Nav unit has such a high dependence on the speed input. I have a stand alone handheld GPS that I use in my boat and occasionally in my truck. It has a built in map of roads and lakes. It doesn't rely on any external input and it can tell me the speed and location just from the satellite signal. I've taken it on trips where I've shut it off and jumped on a plane and then turned it back on in a city 1500 miles away. It took a little longer to initialize and find its location, but it worked. So why does my handheld GPS work so well and the car Nav unit has these problems?
