Automotively speaking, I'm a traditionalist. I don't like car companies messing around too much with their tradition. I really mourn the demise of model names at Cadillac.

Am I the only one who would rather see names like Eldorado, DeVille, Seville and Fleetwood be used instead of their current 3 letters?

I guess if there was some continuity, it wouldn't be so bad. But how can you sell a CTS, SLS and XLR next to a Escalade? Should that be called an XLV or something like that?

I agree with HotRod on this. I got to see this change first-hand back when Acura started switching names to letters.I mean any person would know what a Eldorado is or a Fleetwood just by their name. Tell them STS or CTS and chances are they don't know the difference.

I'm sure it's a marketing thing.. I think the younger generation would rather see the three-letter names.. Like Z28.. I love the old names - and I would bet that everyone who's been used to seeing them for years would prefer the old method.. Atleast right now we still know that a DTS is a DeVille and an STS is a Seville.. The ETC was an Eldorado...

I think the younger generation is just like all generations, they like style and quality. When car companies make a good looking quality car, they respond whether it's called a letter or a name.

BMW and Mercedes had tradition on their side by using numbers. Lexus, Acura and Infiniti had no tradition so they adopted that of what where the top luxury car makers when they came to the market.

That said, going further back Cadillac did used to market their vehicles as numbers. Model 61, 62 and 75. Maybe this would have been a better way to copy the Japanese, while staying true to their own heritage.

At least with the Vseries name and logo, they looked back on their past for inspiration. I hope that they continue to do so as they move forward.

Don't worry, Mad'lac.. I'm an old fart at 31. :p

And that's right - regarding numbers.. Model 61, 62, and 75.. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see what the new models look like - and how they are.. That's mostly what matters anyway..

I think they should keep the names for the "base" models, DeVille, and the letters for the touring versions, DTS. And isnt the CTS basicly the new catera? I really like the Vseries and i hope they start making M5 killers soon. How about a CTS with a V8 and 6 speed? anyone?
