My wife's Dachshund is barking his head off at the squirrels .......

Harry, my wife's Dachshund, has been barking his head off all afternoon at the squirrels scampering all over the back yard. No longer hindered by his lack of a long, warm coat, it seems he feels he must make up for lost time. So it must be Spring!

We've got a couple a couple cats who go crazy watching the squirrels and little lizards who climb the tree outside our windows. Funny stuff.
Ginger the Cat has a tail-wagging panic at birds and squirrels on the patio, foraging for bird seed.
Copper the Dog will look intently at the squirrels but doesn't bark at them. Me and the squirrels are in a constant battle over the bird feeders (of which my wife has six hanging in the trees). I don't mind sharing seeds with the squirrels but they gnaw on the bird feeders and eventually destroy them.
You can tell that we all have serious, terminal cases of cabin fever when it gets down to dogs/cats barking/growling at squirrels.
I had bird feeders of the deck at our house in Great Falls, it was the first year filled my bird watching book in no time. The one day all the birds disappeared, later that week I found a large hawk sitting on the railing of the deck .... if a hawk could smile I am sure he was! After that the squirrels became regular marauders of the bird feeders. For awhile I was keeping the "Wild Bird" shop well into the red. I was about to rig up one the squirrels favorite feeders with electricity so I could shock the little dears. The so called "hot pepper" treated seed didn't phase the squirrels; they seemed to develop a taste for Cayenne pepper.

As time went by I noticed that the main feeder was being monopolized by a very large, fat squirrel whom we dubbed "Mondo." The other squirrels did need to climbed onto the stair landing where the feeder was located because "Mondo" would just empty the feeder in minute as his gluttony took over. Then one day my German Shepherd, who hated the deck went out there and was standing under the feeder when "Mondo" fell off and landed right in her mouth. The Shepherd was so shocked by this happening that she flung super sized squirrel off the deck ..... and he was never seen again!

Seeing as we had tall trees with limbs stretch very near the deck on the house here in Midlothian I didn't even bother setting up feeders, knowing that I would the battle once again.

the rain and ice have kept me inside so much I've actually resorted to conversing with The Wife and watching chick flicks.
In my experience with Dachshunds, all they do is bark their heads off. My neighbor across the street (lived there for 5 years) had SIX of the little bastards. I couldn't even open my front door without them yapping and that neighborhood is all three acre lots with the homes at least 50 yards from each other...
One Dachshund can be noisy, a pack of Dachshunds is definition of cacophony!

rain still coming down and a few patches of ice still in the shady spots. Even with the heaters going my man cave just isn't comfortable. Cabin fever got so bad today that I sat on the couch with the wife and watched "Sleepless in Seattle". I know, I'll turn in my man card tomorrow.
