Check this out...

I'm off all week with the kids.

Everyday, my son keeps saying, "Dad, I'm bored, what can I do"?

I say play one of your stupid video games, clean your room, take out the trash, go pick up all the litter in the neighborhood...

He has all kinds of friends over and still says the samething.

This has basically gone on since last Saturday (8 days ago).

So tonight, at about 6:00 PM EST, he drops the bomb on me. "Dad, I have a book report due tomorrow".

He is teaching himself to work under pressure... there are always those things that you WANT to do and those things that you HAVE to do. If you don't want to do it then you can still be bored - until you HAVE to do it.

I still do that... :halo:
OK, I'm guilty too...! :crying2:

yea, last minute panic is the ONLY way to write a paper...case in point, me, right now. I've got one due on next monday on punishments to crimes and what is and is not effective, and another due, on the same day, on the history of tequila. The only problem is, even though they're not due until Monday the 5th, I'll be in Vegas from this wed. the 30th through sunday the 4th, and sunday night is a no no for me writing a paper, after driving home from Vegas...so yea, I'll be up the next two nights working my rear off on these...last minute panic is GREAT!

I am guilty of this as well. When I was in college I had a paper do and waited till the last minute. I started working on this thing 7:00 the night before it was due it was 1:00 in the morning and the f***ing computer crashes. I lost everything! Now, I don't know how the professors are now a days but this one was an ass. It had to be printed by a certain printer and what not. Thank Goodness Kinko's is open 24 hours and only 15 minuets from the school. I drove there at 1:30 finished the paper at 5:30 and had class at 6:30. Just enough time to get a coffee. That sucked and I learnt my lesson the hard way. Never waited to the last minute again.

I must confess.

Even though I was totally pi**ed at my son before, I did this a couple times when I was in school and college.

I'm not mad at him any more. I can't stay angry at him. Plus, he gets really good grades anyway...

But after tonight, I'm quite sure he won't do this again while he is living in my house.

Not me. I learned my lesson on that a few years ago, and actually taught my father a thing or two about it.

You do NOT do your best work under pressure, and working long hours doesn't always guarantee a better product. At some point you have to recognize when you're stale and you would be better served by a break, a meal, or a good night's sleep.

My motto has become "failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency for me."

Agreed Elvis...which is why, when I reach the halfway point of this paper, I'm going to take a three hour break, and go see Walk the Line...and when I come home, I'll get a good nights sleep, wake up in the morning, go to school, and finish 'er out tomorrow night...and then the final paper, the easy one, will be a tuesday morning/evening project, with bartending as a break. :)

When it comes to papers, I always work best under pressure. I've had instances in which I'd type up a paper in 3rd period wordprocessing, just to turn it in in 4th period english class. That's how bad I can get:crying:

I have a lot to do now; i have two AP biology laboratories due this week, they usually range from about 12 to 20 pages...I haven't even looked at them yet. But, it's somewhat my teacher's fault - she gave me a rolling deadline on one of them, that one was due initially in October:D... I hate doing homework though, especially at home. I can do it at school, in other classes or study hall, but I DESPISE doing work at home. My view is that once you leave work/school to go home, the work ends THERE. Of course, there are always exceptions (like long-term projects), but for everyday homework, i just do it at school...

My mother always forced me to keep up with my work when I was younger. Since I've been in college I've been careful as to what I wait till the last minute on. As my judgement as to what to leave till the last minute has gotten better, so have my grades. It's all a balancing act. :highfive:

When it's just YOUR work, and you are the only one responsible for getting it done, and there are no outside factors you are depending on you can get away with procrastinating. This is usually true in school, thus the false sense of security we develop in thinking that we work better under pressure, or that we can afford to put something off until the last minute.

When you get into the real world, more and more of the work you do is dependent on OTHER people meeting their deadlines too. You realize that we've all fallen victim to the same bad habits. You have to plan on 50% of your people being at least 20% late. You also have to plan on a few people who NEVER complete a task they committed to. They just can't say no or be truthful about their abilities.

In the past 20 years I haven't known ANYONE under age 30 who understood how to plan or meet a deadline without a panic. On the occasions when they DID meet a deadline they made a bigger deal about it than Terrell Owens in an endzone.

Well, I'd gotten a few pages done, then I made a phone call, then I started sharpening my new Smith and Wesson knife. Hot damn, it'll shave dry now...brilliant! One of my passions is making a razor edge on a pocket knife...I've become quite good at it over the years, with my little flat edged diamond stone and my old whet/dry stone...time to call it quits on this paper for the night, as my eyes hurt and I'm unable to think straight about it without coffee...quick nap, then up to see Walk the Line...finished in the morning, eh... :)

Dependant on what it is I will leave things to the last minute, for example, if I have to present something, the presentation will be done hours before the time its due to be presented at.

If its a project, within one project are many mini deadlines, so I have to work to a tight schedule with them.

I work best during the night though. my peak working hours are between 11pm and 3am.
