Monroe 71801 shocks discontinued?

I’ve got a 91 Cadillac Eldorado base 4.9 that needs new rear air shocks. I’ve done a bit of research trying to find the shocks and there’s only one site selling em for $300 a piece when they only retail for around $100. I’ve called a couple of shops and parts stores without any luck. I’m relatively sure that particular part is discontinued. Any ideas here? The car was sitting for over 20 years and I just can’t wait to make it my daily driver anymore.

Dylan I've got my 92 TC up on a hoist with the exact same problem right now. Been looking for the rear shocks for a long time knowing they were slowly deteriorating, well one has completely failed now and I can't find them anywhere in the world. If you can get them for $300 each you should grab them now, but I suspect like most sites they are on their websites but when you actually order them they don't have any in stock. The main parts dealers say they are unlikely to ever be made again because the numbers of cars that use these particular shocks are just too small.
So, I've found a non-ERC air shock that has the same dimensions and mechanical spec as the Monroe 71801, and I'm just transferring the stabilizer bar brackets off the old shocks onto the new shocks. Picking them up from my suspension guy tomorrow so I can send you a picture later.

yup - discontinued a LONG time ago -
they were only used on the transverse - fiberglass - mono-leaf - rear spring -
unique to the
1990 through 1993 Buick Riviera
1990 trough 1992 Cadillac Eldo and Seville
1990 through 1992 Olds Toronado
unfortunately - I don't know of ANY other shock that can be used -

depending on how bad your existing shocks are -
you might consider USED -
they have several listed

Not anymore. I can't find them anywhere for my 88 Toronado.

Hope you guys had a happy thanksgiving. Thanks for the responses. Any luck transferring the stabilizer? Doesn’t seem like a bad idea. I bought a set of shocks off of eBay that were a “perfect fit”…nope. Maybe transferring the stabilizer might work. If not, I did see a bunch of sets used online as basscatt said. Thought I checked that site before but I must’ve been too specific about the year and make. Anyways thanks again guys, I knew I wasn’t the only one dealing with this problem, I just needed to hear it.

Sorry about the late reply. Just got my new ones fitted and the WOF done on Friday.
See photos attached. What my suspension guy did was cut off the bottom body off the old shocks just above the stabiliser bar bracket, and then fit new Monroe Gas Riser shocks (which have very similar mechanical specs) to the old shock body. The ride height WITHOUT any air in the new shocks is perfect. Been driving it around in the weekend, has firmed up the ride at the back but still soaks up all the cats-eyes bumps nicely, and makes you notice how bouncy the front shocks are by comparison! Watch out for the positioning of the air fittings on the new shocks though, they need to be positioned a little more outboard than the originals to clear the shock support tower frame.
All it takes is someone who knows what they are doing with shocks and is setup to modify them accordingly, if you can find them up there.

Hi. I have a 1988 Buick Riviera with the same issue. Those of us affected are everyone with these Vehicles:

I reached out to Monroe and received a short email telling me they were obsolete and basically too bad so sad. I replied letting them know of my displeasure. I think everyone having this issue should reach out to them and remind them that those of us with these cars also have other vehicles that will need Monroe products. I for one will always look at the alternative products from now on.

I also want to take a minute to thank Philip Officer for his post about the modified alternative. The shocks he used were a MGR-502. Unfortunately the shocks mentioned are not available in Canada.

Mine are still working but have a few small cracks in the rubber so it will no longer pass an inspection. I do have one new 71801 so if there is anyone out there that is willing to part with one please let me know.

Have a great day all.
