I've never done this before, but need to lower the back of the cradle 3 inches. I see 4 cradle bolts in the back - so that part is simple.

Do I need to disconnect anything before doing this?
Can I loosen/remove the 4 rear bolts only - or do I need to loosen front to prevent bending the cradle?
Can I support the cradle with a single jack (if I drive up on ramps)? Is that a safe way to lower the cradle?

(In case it matters, I need to remove B1S1 O2 sensor which sits on top of the rear exhaust manifold)

Never dropped it to replace a sensor on 96. Not sure about 01. I have lots of ratchet extensions, wobbles, crows feet, stubs so I have never had to drop a cradle to get to sensors. Have had to do it for the odd starter, compressor etc.

Loosen the front a turn or two.

Quality floor jack, 1ton can lower. Have a couple of jack stands available. Be careful of, and might disconnect

If you ever do have to drop the rear cradle, you need to drop the exhaust first. There are rubber hangers under each muffler and one near the catback.

Sassanach was right - despite what the service manual says, looking straight down behind the engine (at firewwall) I could reach the O2 sensor! Not a fun job (got some nice burns on my forearms) but it worked :)
