Just checking to see if anyone here has made the switch from low profile rims / tries to regular on the CTS?
If so, what is your experience so far?

Pros / Cons?

After bending 5 rims in the past 2 years due to lovely Illinois roads, I am thinking about trying something different.
Kind of weighting out my options at the moment, but appears I have three options 1. continue replacing these garbage konig incident wheels at 120 a whack. 2. buy some stock used OEM wheels off of swap and sell and hope they are built better than these konig rims. 3. Pay up and attempt to get out of low profile and buy some new steel rims.

On a side note, I've never had the stock rims that came with this car as I bought it used with these Konig wheels and just kept the legacy. How is everyone's experience with the stock cadillac 17' alloy rims?

How low profile are you talking about? 20" plus would get messed up anywhere due to not enough tire. Simply too low profile since the wheel wells do not have much clearance for bigger. I would get a nice 18" set and be done. you go stock and you will think it is all squishy and unresponsive. You may like it, though. The ride will be nicer for sure.

I am also on stock wheels/tires for this vehicle. I have modified and been in many a modified car and it is always the same. the line seems to be about 2 sizes bigger than stock is the limit before you start noticing a rougher ride. You start getting in the area of special suspension adjustments or components, alignment issues, and springs and struts wearing fast or blowing out quickly. OE suspensions are designed to take into account the tires and wheels and what stress they absorb before it transfers to the suspension components.

I think 18" (OE wheel is 16x7. A good 18x8 wheel and 235/45-R18 tires) would be the best balance to upgrade the stock 16" on our cars. Or in the OPs case, downgrade. Just my opinion without having tried it *yet*. :)

True. I am no expert, but I think those suspensions also are the FE2 or FE3, sport, etc. Not FE1 soft ride which is common.

I am not positive, though. Maybe someone with more experience on that can can chime in. My statement only applies to the FE1 suspension with 16" wheels.

Exactly. In that case, you could probably go to 20" no problem. You will notice a small ride change, but nothing dramatic. Handling will be the better improvement. Probably go 21" without any modifications, but I will bet the ride starts to get choppy and might need an alignment, or at least it checked.

i'm on 245/30/20's (on 20x8.5 rims) for the past 4 or 5 months, and i just wanted to add that you should definitely get an alignment when going to this size. there are no issue with rubbing, but the camber of the rear will cause premature wear on the tires. i got less than 10,000 miles out of my rear tires, but the fronts are still in almost new condition with very minimal wear. ride quality is not nearly as good, but the handling of the large tires is pretty awesome compared to stock. my gas mileage is down to 18/25
