low oil level warning - but oil level looks perfect??

Hello everyone... I need to tap into your respective brains for a moment. My 2014 CTS (awd coupe) recently flashed a "low engine oil" warning. Incidentally, I just had the oil changed, so I immediately pulled the dipstick and checked it. And then checked it again and again. The dipstick reads just fine? Nice transparent oil at the appropriate level. So I'm going to guess that there is a sensor that is somehow going bad? Can anyone tell me if they had a similar situation and how they handled it?

Thanks!
John

GM has always slipstreamed things in, why I keep telling people that to do a 100% restoration you have to know the make, model, options, assembly plant, date of assembly, and what that plant was doing on that day.

My favorite is that No GM car (never say never) ever came from the plant with a R59 battery.

Double-check your application - you mentioned in the OP you have AWD? (MX7?) - You may need part number 12644779 instead for a AWD application.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's installed inside the Oil Pan, which may be a pain to replace if it's not just a matter of a connector R&R. My books don't cover your model year, perhaps others can advise.

interestingly I just searched Rock Auto and they show a Standard made part for this application with a cross reference to the number FunkZ posted but searching that number shows it is not for the CTS (at least not our generation ll version)...searching the number posted by AwesomeFuture on RockAuto came up with no part...

AwesomeFuture's part shows me it's for an XTS V-Sport (and others)...

My 2011 owners manual says it will tell you when oil is low "if the vehicle has an oil level sensor".... Doesn't say whether it actually has a sensor or not though.. wtf

Copy/paste from the manual:

"ENGINE OIL LOW ADD OIL
If the vehicle has an oil level sensor,
this message displays if the oil level
in the vehicle is low. Check the oil
level and correct it as necessary.
You may need to let the vehicle cool
or warm up and cycle the ignition to
be sure this message clears."

Feel free to check my reference (and I did not see it at Rock Auto as well). The part I referenced has applications across 197 model variants from Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet. I was going by the notes in the post that apparently you have a 3.6 (LFX), and in the OP, you mention a 2014 AWD Coupe. Since I don't have your RPO codes, I was also back confirming your AWD RPO is MX7? So I was going by this application note:

CONNECTOR-INDICATOR-SEAL-SENSOR-SWITCH-TUBE, Engine Oil Level. For: DM 3.0 (LFW),3.6 (LFX),6-SPD AUTO TRANS(MYA),AWD AUTO TRANS PROVISIONS(MX7) (2013 - 2014). Required: 01

If any of my notes above were incorrect, you'll need to adjust and re-reference accordingly. My favorite place for detailing GM Part Reference numbers and back-tracing superceded parts is: wholesale gm parts online dot com. They have really good application specifics and diagrams.

I encourage you to verify as well. Sometimes it also pays to talk to a genuine GM parts counter. The parts counters at Cadillac dealers in my area are class acts and will help with information as well as parts - they've even helped me source discontinued parts from vintage.

Usually if it shows"low oil level" it will be the Oil level switch which is located in the pan, If you have it replaced and it still has the same issue have the mechanic short across the 2 wires and see if it got out. It is just like an "ON/OFF' switch, if it is closed to light goes out , if it is open the light come on.

John, check your oil pan for leaks. I had the same problem and after talking to friends who have owned caddies it seems to be a regular problem. Good luck. It cost me 1400 dollars to fix. The engine and transmission have to be removed to replace the gaskets. I'm shocked at the number of people with similar problems and g.m.c. don't offer any kind of warranty on the issue. Google it and you will see we are not alone with this issue.

Exact thing happened to me last month when i had my oil changed. It turned out to be simply that the person who changed my oil forgot to reset the oil changed monitor. Got my book and read instructions on how to do and did it myself.

Hey John, I have older Caddys.. a 1993 Eldo and a 1990 Allante, and I know there is an "oil quality" indicator that shows the quality.. not the quantity. There is a way to reset that after an oil change, and it's done through the computer panel. Hope that helps. Jon

The same situation happened to me a long time ago. I have 2005 Cadillac SRX and after changing the oil while driving the warning popped up. Of course I pulled over immediately and checked and added oil and the problem never return.
