Today I started My 97 DeVille after a quick trip to the corner store and there was this loud pop and smoke coming from under my hood. I quickly turned the car off. I lifted the hood to see c what was going on and the smoke was coming from under that cover on the northstar engine. After the smoke cleared I restarted the car and every thing was fine. I know I need a tune up.

What you heard was likely a backfire; not an unusual event. And it does not necessarily mean there is anything going wrong or needs attention. There is a pressure relief valve in the intake system to prevent damage.

I can cause my '98 to backfire at startup (almost) any time I care to.

FPR? Fuel Pump or something?
Fuel Pressure Regulator. If the diaphragm is ruptured, after you shut down, fuel pressure will bleed down via raw fuel into the intake manifold. It is very easy to check. See the Tech Tips section.

Very easy. I think there is a "How To" in the Tech Tips section.
