Just bought my '05 V and was driving it into work this morning and hit some heavy rain when all the sudden this loud noise from underneath car started happening. Almost like some sort of a vibration or grinding noise. I thought my transmission out. It was extremely loud. It stopped and when I got out of the heavy rain, but started again when I got into some more of the heavy stuff (then it quieted down once I got to dry area). Has anyone else experienced this or know what it is? Could it be the traction-control system?

Egypt,

I have heard that some drivers here something that sounds like a shotgun sound when they get the V warmed up and drive through large puddles. I've never heard it personally but I believe it has something to do with the exhaust heating up and then cooling down quickly in the water.

As for TCS, a couple of things:

One, if the TCS is engaged, it should pop up with a message on the nav screen saying it's been engaged, if the message doesn't show it probably isn't TCS.

Two, to definitely rule out TCS issues, you can turn off TC and stability by holding down the TC button on the steering wheel for a few seconds (a message will show on the nav saying stability off), just be careful not to lose control bc the computer won't kick in to save you. If you still have the vibrations afterwards you know it's not a TCS issue.

Hope that helps

If it sounded like a monkey with a ball peen hammer in the trunk, it was the exhaust popping from the hot/cold shock. If it was a "rrrrrrrrrrpppppp" vibration that could be felt in the brake pedal, it was probably the stabilitrak pumping a brake or two to keep you straight through the puddles.

Have you ever figured out what it was, mine does the same thing at acceleration in heavy rain and only after the car warmed up completely?
