I have a 2000 Cadillac Escalade, when I was going around a curve about (30 mph) and my passenger side rear axle decided to leave the vehicle. The axle was still attached to the drum and tire. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it? The dealer says it was do to normal wear. I find that hard to believe, if that is the case then it seems like a lot more people would be having the same problem. My vehicle has about 100,400 miles on it.

Couldnt that cause a crash?!?!

That has got to be a safety hazard!

The Escalade axles must use c-clips. I wouldn't exactly call this a normal wear situation. But, c-clips have been known to break, and the result, well you already know. This is not something that happens often. it is rare, but it does occur.

That sucks dude. Back in the mid-nineties, the trucking industry was having trouble with lugnuts breaking. Drivers were reporting seeing their trailer tires and brake drums pass them going down he highway. If a tire (180 pounds) or a drum (120 pounds) going 55 mph comes off the trailer, it'll speed up to around 75 or 80 mph due to the rotational intertia and take off! The axle coming out is NOT due to normal wear and tear, there's something else that caused that.

I have heard of it happing, usually you have some warning with some noise from the rear end of the car, can almost sound like a bad bearing, which some times it is. It is important to chech the rear level every 10k to 15k miles, low fluid level can speen up these problems too. Good you were not hurt

I don't know why GM hasn't scratched that whole C-Clip crap yet. Everyone who races a Chevy knows the first thing you do (if you have a fast car) is to install c-clip elimators. I took it just a bit further and installed a Ford 9" under my 70 Chevelle. :burn: Sorry to hear about the axle man. I once saw a van sitting along the highway and BOTH of his axles had come loose. They never completely left the housing though so here's this van with his axles 3/4 the way out of the housing but still supporting the van. Go-Go-Gadget axles!
