You didn't mention if you have an automatic or manual. I have the 6M and my shifter has gotten sloppy for the past several months. Shifts are a bit loose and notchy. There is a lot of play in the lever even when solidly in a gear position. I'm guessing bushings in my case and will report it to the dealer next time I'm in for service. I have the 9,289 page service manual and I don't want to go thru the trouble of popping the trim and console off, only to find I have to order parts because this is my daily driver and I don't currently have a backup vehicle.

I have the 6-speed transmission. I know what you mean. The shifter has become loose the past month, and I'm also wondering if it's an issue that the dealer needs to fix.

Every one of manual cars will develop this issue. One dealer denied there was an issue twice. Another one confirmed it immediately.

The shifter will slowly and imperceptibly get sloppier and sloppier. Noises start with a squeak over railroad tracks and other surfaces that cause the transmission to shift. Then it adds a clunk when going over even moderate bumps in cold weather until the car warms up. Finally the thing literally falls off the tranny, as I have seen happen in the facebook group.

Don't let this happen to you, kids!
Dealer will replace the shifter assembly under warranty. You will realize just how sloppy it was when you have the new one installed.
When the warranty runs out, the owner will replace it on their own dollar. There have not been any design changes and no reason to think the new assembly will fare differently. Mine was replaced at 16k miles. I guess I'll be covering the next one at 32k.

WTF do you guys do to your shifters? Mine is just fine at ~35K miles and I've never had to rebuild a shifter (just a shifter bushing and seals) until after 100K miles, that includes track driven cars as well.
My thoughts exactly, my reaction to the picture above your post is "WTF?"

Did anyone who has had their shifter wear out or break get the old parts back from the dealer or at least take pictures of the broken shifter so we can see what exactly is failing? I know our shifters are semi-remote and extended off the tailshaft of the transmission, so that adds additional wear points... I'd love to see what exactly is wearing out or failing and see if it can be improved in any way.

Shifter on my M6 car is still extremely firm, positive, and short in travel, I'm actually pretty impressed with it for a stock shifter.

I bought the car with 12k so I don't know how the previous owner drove it.
I asked the service adviser to have the tech compare the old assembly to the new one to see if there are any differences. They said they could not see any. I did not ask for the old assembly back. They also did not suggest replacing just the bushings. It is possible that this would have been sufficient. Though another member had just the bushings replaced and that did not alleviate the issue. Replacing the entire assembly did.

I'm wondering if a Gen 6 Camaro aftermarket shifter would work... Hurst, the GMPP one, etc.

When I've been under my car the ATS-V shifter appears to be a very similar (if not identical) to the Gen 6 Camaro shifter; it's a yoke type frame, the front of which is held to the transmission with two pins and the rear of the yoke held to the tunnel by a rubber isolator, and the yoke supports the shifter arm, pivot ball, and a small linkage to connect the shifter arm to the transmission shift selector shaft.

Based on pics of the Gen 6 Camaro shift mechanism, the entire lower pivot ball is plastic, probably for NVH reasons. Maybe that's what is failing on our cars? If so the Hurst replacement lever and linkage has a metal pivot ball, probably at the expense of a little more NVH / gear noise being transmitted into the car.

Or maybe being a Cadillac with tighter NVH tolerances GM put more isolation rubber in the shift handle itself than the Camaros, and that is what is failing on our cars? I just did a quick google search for "Gen 6 Camaro broken shifter" and didn't find anything... but I didn't spend much time searching.

The Hurst only replaces the lever, pivot, and linkage, while reusing the factory yoke, so perhaps it could be adapted to our cars...

Same feeling here, over 22k miles on mine, still feels perfect.

What happened when you went to Ed Morse? I go to them in Delray and they told me their transmission guy was furloughed. Also is your car modded? Wonding if any issue with warranty.
Mine was replaced under warranty by Sheehan Cadillac in Pompano and, just like Tom Sheehan's other dealerships, they know what they are doing.

Well... as expected, the replaced shifter assembly is starting to clunk on the bumps in the cold just like original did when it wore out. The original was replaced at 16k miles. 12k miles on the new one. I was hoping it was the previous owners driving style for the first 12k miles that contributed. Nope, just a poor GM supplier design/material slection. Quite ridiculous to be replacing shifter assemblies every 16k miles. I will have the creative steel bushings put in when its done, but this swap will be a real pita.

I had to have mine repaired at 60,000 miles. GET the Creative Steel Busings even on a new shifter! 2016-2019 ATS-V Shifter Linkage Bushings - Creative Steel The looseness is a failed mount bushing, and mine went from great to crap in about 5000 miles. I had just a little wear in the pivot ball, so I spent $400 on a shifter at the same time. I believe the labor was about 4 hours.
