Looking to buy a 2003 Escalade ESV with 190,000 miles...Advice??

This is my first post on this forum...looks like a great site for Cadillac help!

My son sells used cars and he came across a 2003 Escalade with 190,000 miles. It is in really nice condition and runs perfectly. Strong motor, good shifting tranny, hvac is all good, new tires and brakes, very decent leather and his partner (body shop) painted the front end and door (previous owner hit a deer but not bad - no air bag deployment, just cosmetic).

Anyway, it looks and runs great, but it has high miles. My son sells a lot of 2000-2005 Silverados and Tahoes and Yukons. Many have 220,000 to 305,000 miles, and still run fine. It seems like those GM vehicles are all about the same, and seem pretty bulletproof.

I'm typically a mopar guy and don't know much about GM stuff, and I am a pretty good mechanic, so I can do most "stuff" myself. I fully understand that any vehicle with that kind of mileage is prone to issues, but it sure appears that this truck was well maintained and only had two prior owners.

Due to the damage that was professionally repaired, he got it cheap, and I can have it for $4450, which is exactly his cost, including body work and paint.

It appears to be a pretty fair deal for me, and I really like the vehicle, but I am hesitant to buy due to the high miles. He says he could sell it on his car lot for $8500, and that's about the going price for a clean 2002-2005 Escalade with under 200,000 miles.

So, what do you folks think?? I understand it could be a real money pit, but it seems like a fair deal. I thought I'd ask you experts for your opinions....thanks in advance.

It seems like a good deal. I would just make sure you have a little extra cash stashed away for any major issues the engine/transmission may need to have. The most expensive repairs would be to the oil pump and front/rear cover seals which could lead to rod bearing issues due to low oil level/pressure conditions if not addressed.

Most of the other usual repairs(cooler lines,hoses,alternator,oil pan gasket, etc) are pretty easy with the right tools and patient.

190k miles too much? Not for an LS engine and transmission. A well maintained engine/transmission can go for 400k miles easy in our trucks. However, you will have to be prepared to spend some money to bring a newly acquired used high mileage one back to original or better running condition most of the time due to lack of proper maintenance.

However, some shoppers do get lucky and fine great well maintained used ones with high mileage that had most expensive repairs already done. Yet, most high mileage Escalades for sale usually do not have expensive repairs done hence why the owner is selling it. Why drop $1500 or more to repair a serious problem and then sell it?

The problem with our engines is that a seller can hide minor leaks for expensive to repair parts like the rear cover/seal easily by wiping the oil from the oil pan and topping off the oil level. So it is good to do a detailed inspection on a high mileage Escalade to uncover any hidden surprises that can be very $$$ to repair. Sometimes our engines can have more than one small leak at the same time from various locations like valve covers,oil pan, oil cooler lines, valley cover,etc that goes unnoticed unless you check your oil level regularly or notice small drips on your garage floor.

Usually leaks can be first spotted just by looking at the oil pressure gauge. If the oil gauge reads less than 40(usually around 30) at idle and barely rises to 50(or worst 40) under hard accelerating then most likely the pressure is being lowered due to an oil leak in the system. Not 100% proof of a leak, but a clear sign to take notice of without crawling on the ground. Low oil pressure could also point to other expensive repairs like rod bearings and/or oil pump.

Good Advice above. I am at 270k on my 2005. Basic maintenance, she runs like a too and looks awesome too.

I do have the dreaded rear main seal leak. Can't justify $1,300.00 for $50.00 repair seals. I will attack that in the spring on my back.

Another thing to look at are the exhaust manifold bolts. They are know to snap off at the block. There are some easy fix kits available if you look around.
