Least safe cars of 2006

Posted Oct 24, 2005, 12:00 PM ET by John Neff

If you’re worried about how your brand new, reasonably priced economy car would fare in something a little more intense than a fender bender, check out Forbes’ list of the Least Safe cars of 2006. Included on the list are the

Hyundai Elantra,
Kia Optima,
Mazda6 (!),
Nissan Sentra,
Suzuki Forenza
and Toyota Corolla (!).

Forbes has based its list on the criterion of failing two out of three Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests. All of these cars failed both their rear- and side-impact crash tests.

For comparison’s sake we decided to look up the crash test ratings of each vehicle on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site to see how each fared in that organization’s crash tests. The NHTSA only performs a front- and side-impact test, but no rear. Their results, however, were fairly inconsistent with those from the IIHS. Only the Sentra and Forenza did poorly in both tests.

I can't say I'm surprised. You can't expect Kia to sell those cars that cheap without sacrificing something. Besides, you don't really need a SAFE car, I mean play the odds - you probably won't be in a serious wreck that would matter; maybe a fender bender...:lildevil:

The current Elantra is still based on the basic underpinnings of the model that Im driving around right now, and thats been around since 1997. No surprise there.

Well, it was a Dodge Stratus, so it just crumpled up like a coke can basically. It leaked that orange coolant everywhere too. I was pissed, but I was more worried about the drunk lady in the dodge that ran the stop sign and impacted me at 60 MPH! It was scary too, because I knew she was going too fast to stop in time and I was like, "Damn, I hope I don't kill her..." But she made it out okay, had to go to some classes and do some community service for being D.W.I...

That's what I tell everyone too. I don't need no "crumple zones", but if you hit me, YOU sure as hell need them.:histeric:
Like the bumper sticker says:

Your car is my crumple zone.

If I can ever find where that bumper sticker is sold I'm buying one for the 75.
