Not having a clue to which unit to look at or why, of if there really is a good enought detector to purchase that does both Laser & Radar.
Read loads of cliams about many detectors, but they all claim they are the best.

What to do?

Olde55 has built-in detectors

I like the Escort 9500ix. It stores and gets weekly updates of all gps locations of redlight cams, speed traps, and even where cops sit alot. Photo radar boxes also, as well as real radar from cop cars. It seems to work the best out of all i have seen, Even the valentine 1. The reason for that is the gps locations. You can even add them manually. Also it learns and stores any false alarms, like doors ect, so if it sees the same exact location a few times, it stores it as not real.

I agree with Jesse, i put my old one 9500i in my fiance's lexus and got myself a 9500ix - they're awesome. I just put one in on the v hooked up to the mirror power.

1. 9500ix
2. http://www.invisicord.com/order.html ( power cable to mirror )
3. http://www.countryjoycrafts.com/350Z/escortmount.htm ( mirror mount )

= Sweet stealth setup you can do yourself in 15 minutes.

Odds are if you're shot by any laser with only a detector in the car, it's only going to warn you that you are about to be pulled over. Same with an instant-on radar. But both of those are not the majority of situations (yet). If radar detection is the goal, then the majority of nicer detectors are all going to detect signals close enough to each other with respect to capabilities that it isn't going to really matter which brand /model you choose. So it comes down more to specific features a particular brand /model offer over their competition and what appeals to your needs and desires most.

Like Jess I have an Escort 9500, mostly because of the GPS blocking feature it has.

9500 ix. Bought it before I made the 800 mile trip home from Scott. Saved me 4-5 times just on way home. Best radar I've ever owned

OK, so I take it that the Escort 9500 ix detects both laser & radar !

valentine doesnt have the gps blocker. So unless you like hearing your detector going off every minute you wouldnt want one

I've owned an early generation Valentine for years and it's saved me a lot of money. The Escort Jess refers to sounds interesting for the GPS feature. The Valentine and top model Escorts have always been very competitive.

Personally, I believe Laser detectors are useless, as earlier pointed out, the beam is so focused you'll know when you're illuminated and that tells you to get your DL, registration and proof of insurance ready.

Instant on radar (manually triggered by the officer) is much like laser, except the signal goes much further. If you are the lone wolf on the road and the cops are using instant on or laser (Lidar), get ready for a chat with officer friendly.

If the cops leave their radar unit on continuously, then your radar detector will give you ample warning to slow down. If they are using instant on and there is traffic ahead of you, you'll get a warning to slow down. The key to remember is they have to SEE you to trigger the Lidar or instant on. Drive smart...

Nothing is as good as having two radar antennas, one front and one rear, on the Valentine One. The arrows are best on highway when the Valentine starts to chirp away and you don't have to wonder if the cop is in front or behind. And if there is cop, front and one behind the arrows will not leave you wondering how many sources and where they are. I've one for over 10 years and have used radar detectors along jammers for 23 years.

My Valentine One sometimes warns me MILES ahead of the trap. For me it's all about distance. I rarely get any false alarms with my V1. As Norm said, the 360 degree perimeter coverage is a very important feature. You can never touch a V1 on e-bay for under 300 bucks, and I think that says a lot right there about the product. Mike Valentine left Cincinnati Microwave (Escort/Passport) to start his own co. so he could produce a better product.
