I have a '99 SLS with 87,000 miles that is making a klunk/thump sound occasionally whenever i make left hand turns. I have narrowed it down to the drivers side and it only happens when making turns going 15-20 mph. Could this be the ball joint going bad or maybe a loose or worn out bushing? Any advise would be appreciated.. I meant to say LEFT hand turns in the title of the thread...

CV joint.
So would you call this the beginning stage of the CV joint going out. The car drives perfect and like I said I only notice it occasionally when I am making the left hand turns . Should I just learn to live with the noise until it needs to be replaced? How will i know when the joint finally does break? I have never had one break before..

Yes, if it is the CV joint (and that's a pretty good symptom), it's in the early (warning) stage. When the joint breaks, you'll have not doubt about it. You'll loose the drive axle and be left stranded. Don't wait. Get it checked out and fixed if that's the problem.

The way he said "Klunk" and not a continuous clacking during turns would suggest to me a worn lower ball joint. Possibly even a worn outer tie rod end. Just me 2 cents.

Btw (if it is a axle issue) do not wait for it to break, your wheel is only affixed via a 32mm(ish) nut to the outter end of your constant velocity (CV) axle. Which means if it fails, your tire/rim will come off.

have the CV axle checked
i had that clunking noise last month
first thing i thout of was the CV axle i had it checked out it was fine
then i thought it was the strut bearing had that checked they said that was fine

the noise lasted for 3 weeks total i think
finaly this week i took it in for a tire leak to be repaired they dismounted the tire cleaned the rim up there was a rim leak got that taken care of tire mounted and balanced proper air pressure no more clunking noise

so its possible the CV joint is where your issue is
regardless where its coming from have a professional check it out make sure that is not the issue if it is then great you know what hte problem is and you can have it repaired if its not the issue then they can start looking in other areas

If no problems are found in the suspension, do not forget the intermediate shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering rack.

The original design of the shaft was well-known for causing a very distressing sounding pop/klunk that transmitted through the steering wheel when turning sharply at low speed. I seem to recall reading that sometimes it would only be noticed when turning in one direction.

Thank you for all the advise everyone, this gives me a good idea what I should be looking for now. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem but my front struts are completely worn out. The drivers side is the worse of the two, it is leaking and provides barely any absorbtion. I recently replaced the motor mount on the drivers side and was thinking that the mount and other parts could be wearing out quicker and breaking because of the rough ride on that side of the car being there is not much shock absorbtion.
