No matter how you position the streering wheel the key will not turn in the ignition. :rant2:

My wife toke my car and when she got to the florist the key would not turn and she beep me on my cell phone to tell me. You should of seen the the look on the faces of the two guys that were working for me. Priceless, but the car will not start so if any of you have had this problem before PLEASE enlighten me. :alchi:

Check your owners manual (section 2) and look up Shift Lock Release. This does not sound exactly like your problem, but it can't hurt to try it.

This was an issue with 1999 Grand Cherokees (well actually the whole piece of crap truck was an issue), and it was the result of some cheap chinese made plastic parts in the lock cylinder assembly that would break off... it was some sort of sleeve. If it isnt the shift interlock itself, id say it might be something similar in your case.

I had to drill out the ignition lock on one, and replace it. I tried to keep it clean, but some tiny fragments got left behind.

If your key will not turn, take a hammer and tap the end of the key while trying to turn it. It will "bump" the pins up, it you may just catch it in the right position to turn.

On my 90 I occassionally had to hold the wheel in between the two stops that the locking pin is hitting, so basically you are not pushing against a stop either to the left or right. It sometimes took a little wiggle too.

I have the same problem right now, ever find a solution? atleast the car is stuck in the driveway at home.

Well I had a tow truck come this morning to take the car to a repair shop. :crybaby:
The driver ask if he could try something first so I said OK. He tried everything I had already done to no avail. :bigroll:
Then he took a screw driver and tapped on the key while it was in the ignition. He did this several times and finally it turned and started.:worship:

I gave hinm 10 bucks he made my day!:alchi:

Thanks for the reply I tried tapping on it a bit, I guess I can try some more, otherwise I'll have it towed in.

You might want to put some teflon in the key holder. My mechnic said the tumbles get stuck and that is the reason the key will not turn the lock.

I just wanted to bump this thread and say thanks, we ended up towing the car to a shop where they replaced the ignition cylinder, tried everything we could, it was broken.
