Key question

The person I bought my 1998 SLS from only had I key and one remote I am the only driver so this works but I need a spare key at least for emergency I had a key made at the hardware store but it only opens the door it wont start the car I guess I have to have a blank key with the chip in it is this someting I have to get from the stealership and about how much are they? Thank you SEVILLE 85

I just got a new key from the dealer. It cost $35. They have to program it to work. Same deal with the remotes. They have to program those too.
