So we all know Jay is a huge car nut with gobs of cars. It seems he has no real hot rods, so he decided to have one made. See the think below that gives the whole story.

The Good: Modded LS7 Power!
The Bad: 32 Ford body Style
The Ugly: Uses a CTS-V Rear Differential

I'd love to know why they chose this diff. YIKES!

Why not use a Vette Diff? Or some other independant rear, not made of paperthin peanut brittle?

Two reasons why I think they went with the CTS-V rearend, and one was already mentioned.

One because I think the rod is lighter in weight.

Two, because GM helped build the car with him and GM will pick up the tab when it busts.

Jay Leno is not that dumb if you think about it. ;)

That Rod doesent weigh much. As with most components, its the weight that causes problems. Kind of why the GN can use a 200r4 trans and the SS impala was blowing 700r4's regularly. HP & weight dont mix well.

I'm not so sure I'd agree with that assumption. Leno is surrounded by some of the best automotive talent money can buy. IMO, that's why he can sometimes come across as being way more knowledgable than he really is. If you read his columns and articles he writes you'd pick up on a rich guy that's just living out all of our dreams, not a real gearhead.

Given a choice between the two, I'd be the former.

Seems like he really is a gear head, he does do some of his own work I've seen on a few TV shows.

Plus he does have a hot rod, his 56 Buick that does 11's in the quarter with him and three passengers! I'm sure he has more. Maybe they meant street rod...

I'm not saying the guy knows nothing, or that he NEVER gets his hands dirty. I'm just saying that suggesting that the guy's a REAL gearhead simply because he happens to own a ton of nice mechanical toys (and he does), is wrong IMO. Like I said, if you've read his articles and columns over the years, you'd understand what I'm trying to say. His money has allowed him to realize a dream that we all have, but I still think he's only a rich guy learning as he goes along. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy and I fully admit to being jealous as hell of what he does, his lifestyle, and his toys. He's a creative guy too. That's just another reason I like reading what he writes.

I read his book and believe me he is a genuine gearhead through and through.

The car was at SEMA in GM's booth. I laughed when I read that it used the V rearend.

BTW, the Impala didn't use the 700R4. It used the 460LE. I don't remember that being a particularly weak spot on the car, having owned two or three. Of course, they weren't six speeds, and didn't put out nearly as much HP as our current rides :)

I'm positive that the 460 couldn't handle what our mills put out. No way.

Peace!

Actually that's "4L60" then the "4L60E" (for "electronic") and as I recall it was the replacement for the 700-series transmissions so he's not TOO far off.
